ウガンダ Uganda

最近、アメリカからの留学生の影響を受けて、ウガンダに少し興味を持ちました。私が知っているウガンダはアミン大統領の独裁政治、そして常に争いの絶えない怖い国ということだけです。その若い留学生は医者になるための勉強をしています。彼女は年に一度ウガンダの小さな村へ行きボランティアとして医療活動を手伝っているそうです。彼女が主なメンバーになっているサイトENGEYEを見て下さい。募金活動を手伝いながら自分の勉強を頑張っている姿には感動します。２月にまた日本からウガンダへ出かけるそうです。すごい！

Recently I have become interested in Uganda because my international student, who is from the U.S., had an effect on me. I only knew that the president Amin was the Ugandan military dictator and that the country is scary because usually there is some ongoing internal insurrection. The young student is studying to be a doctor. She goes to a small village in Uganda once a year helping with medical activities as a volunteer. Please look at this site ENGEYE which she is a main member. I’m really impressed with her because she is studying medical science and helping ENGEYE with various fundrasing projects. I heard that she’s going there again this February from Japan. It’s incredible!

京都 Kyoto

京都へ行きました。
福岡、神戸、小田原そして東京から京都に集まって、紅葉とおしゃべりを楽しんで来ました。前もって細かく計画を立てていなかったので、前夜にホテルでインターネットで調べて観光しました。その時にとても役立ったのがこの小さなパソコンです。便利でした。
相国寺の特別展、東福寺、真如堂の見事な紅葉や清水寺の夜景、美しい平等院など、いい思い出が出来ました。

I went to Kyoto.
My friends from Fukuoka, Kobe, Odawara and Tokyo gathered together for this trip. We enjoyed talking and autumn leaves. We didn’t have much sightseeing plans so we searched everything by the internet every night beforehand at our hotel. This small computer was very useful and convenient at that time! We saw a special exhibition of Shokokuji, great autumn leaves at Tofukuji, Shinnyodo, the night view of Kiyomizu-temple, beautiful Byodoin-temple and so on. We made some really good memories.

お茶会 The Tea Ceremony

お久しぶりです。　しばらく更新しない間にすっかり冬になってしまいました。
研究所で２つの調査の仕事が重なったので忙しかったです。

浅草寺の本坊「伝法院」でお茶会がありました。
娘が茶道を習っているお教室も参加したので、アメリカからの留学生２人を連れて行きました。私も学生時代に習いましたが、すっかり作法を忘れていて新鮮な気持ちでお抹茶を頂きました。大勢のお客様の前でお茶を立てた娘はかなり緊張したようでした。表千家と裏千家の両方で頂きましたが、それぞれの特徴が出ていて興味深かったです。留学生も初めての経験で喜んでくれました。足はしびれたようでしたが・・・。

Long time no see. It has turned to winter while I haven’t updated this blog.
I had two research works at the institute, so I was busy.

There was a tea ceremony at Denpoin in Sensoji-temple at Asakusa.
I took two international students from the U.S. to the tea ceremony because I was participating in my daughter’s teacher class. I also learned when I was a student, but I forgot a lot and when I drank the Matcha it was like the first time. My daughter who was wearing kimono was very nervous when she performed the tea ceremony because there were many guests. We had tea at both the Omote-senke and Ura-senke rooms. It was interesting seeing the different features of the rooms. The international students enjoyed their first experience attending the tea ceremony. But they lost feeling in their feet…

オクトーバーフェスト Oktoberfest

私が仕事をしている研究所の研究員に誘われて横浜にあるドイツ学園のオクトーバーフェストへ行きました。静かな住宅地の中にあるきれいな学校でした。校庭では、生徒の親たちが協力してドイツのソーセージやハム、スイスのチーズを使ったお料理やお酒などを売っていました。日本の学校とは違った雰囲気で面白かったです。

A research worker from the institute where I work invited me to a German school’s Oktoberfest in Yokohama. It was a beautiful school in a quiet residential area. The student's parents all worked together to sell German sausages, ham, and food with Swedish cheese and alcohol. The school was interesting because its atmosphere was different from Japanese schools.

One of my blog friends informed me of this site from Hawaii. This web camera at Waikiki beach is showing live video all day long every day. When I’m tired or the weather in Tokyo is bad, I enjoy this site because I can see the blue sky and ocean in Hawaii. If you have time, why don’t you take a look at it?

エイチ&エム H&M

スェーデンのH&Mが銀座に1号店をオープンしました。TVの取材なども来ていてすごい人でした。入店するまでに2時間待ちだとか！あぁ、また私が見に行けるのは当分先のことになりそうです。11月には2号店が原宿に出来るそうです。

H&M from Sweden opened their first shop in Ginza. There were so many people and many TV crews came to report on it. I heard you have to wait two hours to enter the shop. Ah, I won’t be able to see the inside of the shop for a while. Their second shop will open in November in Harajuku.

東京のブルーマン The Blue Man in Tokyo

ニューヨークで見てすごく面白かったブルーマンを東京でも見ました。日本でのパフォーマンスとどう違うのかも比べてみたかったのです。同じような部分も沢山ありましたが、全体的に東京の舞台の方がハイテクだと思いました。ショーが終わってからブルーマンと写真を撮ることが出来ました。私は彼らのまつげまでブルーな顔に興味があり、一人のブルーマンに「顔に触ってもいいですか？」と聞きました。ブルーマンはどんな時も決して話しませんが、彼が頬をこちらに向けたので、顔に触ってみました。油性のペンキ？！彼も私の頬を触ったので一瞬ドキッとしましたが、彼はブルーの手袋をはめていたので、私はブルーウーマンにはなることはありませんでした。ブルーマン、すごくお勧めです！！

I saw the Blue Man Group again in Tokyo because I really enjoyed it in New York. I also wanted to compare between their performances in Japan and the U.S. Most of the performance was the same but I thought the show in Tokyo was more high-tech. After the show, we could take pictures with them. I was also curious about their faces because their eyelashes were also blue. So I said to one of them “Can I touch your face?” The Blue Man Group members never speak during or after their performances, so he just turned his cheek toward me and I touched his face. Oil paint?! I was startled because he touched my cheek too. He was wearing blue gloves, but I didn’t turn into a Blue Woman. I highly recommend The Blue Man Group!!

ホボーケン Hoboken
お友達を訪ねてニュージャージーへパストレインで行きました。ホボーケンは、静かな住宅地で良いところでした。対岸から見るマンハッタンです。
I went to Hoboken, New Jersey by the Path train.　Hoboken was a nice and quiet residential area. I saw Manhattan from its shore.

カンフーパンダ Kung Fu Panda

私は、この映画が好きです。友人は子供のための映画だと言いますが、大人が見ても考えさせられるメッセージのある良い映画だと思います。ラーメンの「秘伝の材料」と武術の「秘伝の巻物」の中味とは？パンダのポーとシーフー師匠を、ジャック・ブラックやダスティン・ホフマンが吹き替えをしているというのも面白かったです。私のお勧めの映画です。
I like this movie. My friends said it’s a children’s movie. But I think it’s a thought-provoking movie for adults too and there are some important messages in it. What are the secret ingredients to making noodles and the secret scroll of martial arts? The voices of the characters for Panda Po and the Master Shifu were Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman. It was very interesting. I recommend you see this movie.

スタッテン島へ渡るフェリーは無料で乗ることが出来て、自由の女神が見られます。
This is the Staten Island Ferry. It was free and we could see the Statue of Liberty.












ブルックリン橋　The Brooklyn Bridge
橋の下にデンマークの芸術家のアートの滝がありました。
This is a waterfall built by a Danish artist under the Brooklyn Bridge.
















ヤンキース 対 メッツ Yankees VS Mets
面白かったのは、ヤンキースファンが「Let’s go Yankees!」 と叫ぶと、メッツのファンが「Yankees suck!」 と繰り返していたことです。
It was funny. Yankees fans yelled “Let’s go Yankees” and later the Mets fans yelled “Yankees suck!”They repeated them over and over.

ハーレムでは、朝ゴスペルを聞き、夜アポロシアターのアマチュアナイトショーを見ました。ミッドタウンに比べると建物が低くて、空がよく見えました。アポロシアターのショーは観客が出場者の合否を決めます。レベルがすごく高かった！
I listened to gospel music in the morning and I saw Amateur Night in Harlem at the Apollo Theater in the evening. There were many low buildings in Harlem compared to Midtown so I could see the blue sky very well. The audience could decide if the contestants were good or no good at the Apollo Theater. The contestants’ levels were very high!

まだ明るいですが、すでに夜7時半です。イエローキャブがいっぱい走っていました。
It’s still bright out but it’s already 7:30pm.　There were a lot of yellow cabs.


トイザラスの中には、観覧車や動く恐竜などがいました。
There is a Ferris wheel, a moving dinosaur and so on in Toys Я Us.




ソーホーにあるユニクロです。日本のアニメはアメリカで人気なんでしょうね？
This is the UNIQLO shop in SOHO. Japanese anime is very popular in the U.S, right?

ニューヨーク New York

オハイオの結婚式のあとニューヨーク（ＮＹ）へ行きました。初めてのＮＹです。
結論から言うと、東京にとてもよく似ていました。短い滞在期間の中、出来るだけのことをして来ました。さすがに疲れましたが楽しかったです。一つ心残りは、セントラルパークをサイクリング出来なかったことです。

I went to New York after the wedding in Ohio. It was my first trip to NY.
In conclusion, NY was very similar to Tokyo. While I was in NY, I did everything that I could do there. True, I was exhausted, but I enjoyed it. There was just one more thing that I wanted to do in NY, ride a bike in Central Park. Maybe next time.

宿泊先に近い地下鉄の駅96thストリート
東京の地下鉄との違いがありました。
車内は涼しいけれど、ホームではエアコンが効いていなくてとても暑いこと。
急行があることと車内に網棚がないこと。
It’s the 96th Street subway near my apartment hotel.
There are some differences between Tokyo and New York City subways.
It was cool inside the trains but very hot on the platforms because there was no air conditioning.
They were some express trains but there weren’t any overhead racks.

初めての個展 The first personal exhibition

友達のお嬢さんの初めての個展へ行ってきました。新宿眼科画廊でやっています。芸術のことは分からない私ですが、夏らしい涼しげな作品だと思いました。大作で、ギャラリーのお部屋全部を使っていました。
日中は暑いですが、夕涼みを兼ねて是非行ってみて下さい。

I went to the personal exhibition that one of my friend’s daughter is holding. It’s being held at Shinjuku Ganka Garo. I don’t know much about art but I felt her works were cool for the summer season. The big piece used the entire room.
It’s very hot during the daytime, so please go there in the evening to enjoy both her artwork and the cool breeze.

デトロイト空港 Detroit Airport

オハイオへ行く時も、ニューヨークへ行く時も乗り継ぎで降りた空港です。
長いターミナルを行き来する赤いシャトルはとても速かった。
I used this airport for my transfer flights to Ohio and New York.
The red shuttle in the long terminal was very fast.



日本人の利用が多いのでしょう。日本語の表示があったり、どら焼きを売っていました。
There were many Japanese signs and a shop was selling Japanese sweets.
I think that there are a lot of Japanese customers there.

ブランチ The Brunch

結婚式の翌日、ジョンさんの両親宅でブランチを頂きました。美しい自然に囲まれた良いところで、その土地の広さにはびっくりしてしまいました。
I had brunch at John’s parents’ house the next day. I was so surprised because the place was huge. It was a really nice place surrounded by lots of grass and many beautiful trees.













ジョンさんのお母様はそこで焼き物を作っています。これは、彼女が結婚式の記念品として２００個作り、プレゼントしてくれたものです。おもてなしありがとうございました。
John’s mother makes pottery there. She made 200 china bowls and gave each of us one as a wedding favor.

結婚式 Wedding

先月、結婚式に参列するためにオハイオへ行ってきました。
東京にいた時に日本語を教えていたジョンさんとヘザーさんの結婚式でした。素敵な場所でおしゃれな結婚式でした。出席できて本当に嬉しかったです。東京と違ってオハイオはとても広くどこへ行くにも車が必要です。彼らのご両親やご姉弟がいつも気を配ってくれて、とても良い思い出が出来ました。ありがとう、ジョンさん、ヘザーさん！
I went to Ohio to attend a wedding last month.
The wedding was for John and Heather. I taught Japanese to John when he was in Tokyo.　It was a very fashionable wedding and at a very nice place. I was really glad to be there. Ohio is very big, so people need cars when they want to go place. It was totally different from Tokyo. Their parents, brothers and sisters always cared about us and I’ve returned with many good memories.

待てませんか Can’t you wait?

駅に着いて電車を降りている人がまだいるのに、我先にと乗って来る人がいます。
なぜそんなに急ぐのでしょう、空いている席を見つけて早く座りたいのでしょうか。
降りようとしている時に押しのけて乗って来られると、とても殺伐としていて嫌な気分になります。これは忙しい東京だからでしょうか。２～３分も変わらないと思うのに、もっと心にゆとりを持って欲しいなと感じます。

When the train gets to a station, while people are getting off the train, some people selfishly are getting on. I’m wondering why some people want to get on the train so quickly. Do they want to find some empty seats and sit down? I feel bad because of the brutal atmosphere when I’m getting off the train. Is this because of the busy Tokyo lifestyle? I think there isn’t a big difference between just a few minutes. I wish everyone had more compassion.

網田焼 Oda ware

以前、ここで紹介をしました網田焼の蒼土窯の前田先生より「小坪菫」の額を頂きました。なぜそんなすごいものを頂いたかというと、先生からの依頼でスピーチなさった内容の英訳のお手伝いをしたからです。最初、私のような素人の拙い翻訳では申し訳ないと思ったのですが、先生が勇気づけて下さったこともあり思い切ってお引き受けしました。

I received a ‘Kotsubosumire’ Oda ware from Mr. Maeda. He is the owner of Oda wares’ Sodo kiln. I introduced him on my blog before. Maybe you’re wondering why I received this great gift from him. Well the reason is because I helped to translate for his speech in English. At first, I was worried that I couldn’t do it because of my poor English abilities, but he encouraged me to do it.

バラの庭のサロン Rose Garden Salon

バラの美しい季節になりました。そのバラを丹精込めて美しく咲かせた木村恭子さんのお庭で行われるサロンです。庭の持ち主である木村さんのバラにちなんだ手作りのお菓子やお茶を頂きながらお庭を楽しみます。木村さんは、ご自宅でテーブルコーディネートのクラスとお料理のクラスを開いています。サロンは今週からです。詳細は、彼女のHPをご覧下さい。

The season for roses has come. This is Mrs. Kyoko Kimura’s rose garden salon which she takes great care of. She is the owner of this garden. Here you can enjoy the roses with her handmade sweets and roses teas. She also has a table coordinating and cooking class at her home. This rose garden salon will start this week. コペンハーゲン Copenhagen

春になったとはいえデンマークのコペンハーゲンではまだ少し寒かったです。デンマークの人々は皆、英語を話しますが、町の標示がほとんどデンマーク語なので困りました。でも人々はとても親切で、ちょっと聞けば丁寧に教えてくれました。
Spring has come in Copenhagen in Denmark but it’s still a little cold there. Danish people speak English but there are few signs around the city in English. It was difficult to find places, but the people were very kind and when I asked for direction, they told me much.

If the flag of Denmark is on the roof of the palace, it means the queen is there.

I was lucky because there was a free concert at Teatro alla Scala and I was　impressed by the opera singers’ voices.

レオナルド・ダ･ヴィンチの「最後の晩餐」がある教会です。
残念ながら予約が取れず見られませんでした。
This is the church that has ‘The Last Supper’ painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a reservation to see it.

ヒルトン小田原 Hilton Odawara

国の施設の勤労者リフレッシュセンターとしてオープンした所が、4年程前にヒルトン小田原リゾート＆スパに変わりました。エントランスから素晴らしく、ロビーも広々としていました。お部屋もとても広く、すべてオーシャンビュー。外にはテニス、パターゴルフの施設やチャペルがあり、中には天然温泉、岩盤浴、プール、ボーリング場に図書館までありました。ヒルトンの経営になってかなり変わったのかと、友人に聞くと、ほとんど前のままだとか。あぁ、我々の税金で作ったのね！(￢_￢)　
これは、昨年の話です。

There was a governmental refreshing center for working people in Odawara. About four years later, it was transformed into Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa. The entrance was great and the lobby was very big. The room was very spacious with an ocean view. There were a sports facility outside for tennis and golf, and a chapel as well. There were a natural hot spring, a bedrock bath, pools, bowling alleys and also a library. I asked my friend whether it had changed a lot after the Hilton’s management. She said there had not been such a big change since the center started. Oh, it originally built from our taxes! :(

東京都薬用植物園 The Tokyo Metropolitan Pharmaceutical Plant Garden

研究所の先生方と一緒に東京都薬用植物園へ行って来ました。そこは、広大な敷地に薬用植物を収集、栽培しています。脱法ドラッグ、健康食品の指導や取り締まりの為に試験、研究をしているところです。法律で禁じられている大麻草やサボテンなども栽培しています。東京ではここでしか見られないアヘンのもとになる種類のケシが二重の柵の中で植えられています。普通の薬用植物は一般公開していて、参考資料も色々とくれるので思いがけない発見が出来ると思います。興味のある方は、行って見て下さい。

I went to the Tokyo Metropolitan Pharmaceutical Plant Garden with the doctors of the institute. It’s a very big place. They collect and cultivate many kinds of pharmaceutical plants there. They study and examine illegal drugs and health food products for guidance and regulations. They also have cannabis, cactuses, etc. that are illegally grown in public. They grow opium poppies inside a double-fenced area which is the only place in Tokyo where we can see them.
This is garden opened to the public so you can see the many pharmaceutical plants. They give you some reference materials and I think you’ll unexpectedly be surprised by what you see there. Please go there for a visit if you are interested.

マイケルさん Michael-san

悲しい知らせです。
ブログ友だちのマイケルさんが癌のために１月に亡くなりました。彼はまだ４５歳でした。日本の中学校で英語を教えた経験があり、とても日本に理解がありました。彼は私のブログに初めて海外からコメントを入れてくれた人です。その時は驚いたと共にとても嬉しかったのを憶えています。彼のブログの文章は私が理解するには難しく、なかなかコメントを送ることは出来ませんでした。でも、私のブログにはよくコメントを入れてくれました。彼のブログの内容から具合が悪くなっていく様子がわかり辛かったのですが、私の英語の力では励ますことも慰めることも出来ずとても残念でした。
マイケルさん、ありがとう、そして、どうぞ安らかにお休み下さい。

One of my blog friends, Michael, passed away with a rare cancer disease in January. He was just 45 years old. He had experienced teaching English at Japanese junior high schools before, and he was deeply understanding of Japan. He is the first person from overseas who wrote his comments on my blog. When I received it, I remember that I was surprised and very happy at the same time. It was difficult for me to understand his articles on his blog so I couldn’t send many comments to it. But he often wrote to my blog. It was sad finding out how bad his condition was through his blog, but I couldn’t give encouragement or solace because of my poor English.
Michael, thank you and rest in peace.

翌日、博多から高速バスに乗り伊万里へ行きました。伊万里焼の窯元が31軒ある大川内山を、清峰先生に案内をしてもらいました。友人はその先生に8年絵付けを習っています。町のいたるところに焼きものがありました。
The next day, we went to Imari by express bus from Hakarta. Mr. Seiho who teaches drawing on porcelain china guided us around Okouchi town, which has 31 kilns of Imari china. My friend has learned from him for eight years. There was china all over the town.

唐津 Karatsu

電車で唐津へ行きました。車窓から虹の松原などを見ながら博多から１時間半ほどのところでした。唐津は、唐津焼が有名です。窯元は駅の近くにはありませんでしたが、商店街には唐津焼のお店がたくさんありました。丘の上に建つ唐津城は美しく、「舞鶴城」とも言われているそうです。お祭りの唐津くんちに使われる曳山や唐津神社を見ました。
　
My friend and I went to Karatsu by train. It took about 90 minutes from Hakata and we saw Niji-no-Matsubara from the train. Karatsu is famous for Karatsu ware. There were not any kilns near the station but there were many pottery shops in the shopping mall. Karatsu castle sits on the hill. It was beautiful and they also call it ‘Maizuru castle’ which means ‘the castle of the dancing crane’. We saw Hikiyama(floats) which are decorations for Karatsu-Kunichi festival and Karatsu shrine.

久留米 Kurume

3年前から仕事で久留米に行っている従兄弟に会いました。なんと30年振りでした！お互いに顔がわかるか心配しましたが、無用のことでした。小さい時の思い出話から近況報告まで、魚市の「ふぐ料理」をご馳走になりながらとても楽しい時間でした。
魚市のスタッフの人達はとても優しく、アットホームなお店でした。「ふぐ料理」はとても美味しく、特に唐揚と雑炊は最高でした。久留米に行ったら是非行ってみて下さい。

I met one of my cousins who has worked in Kurume for three years. It’s been thirty years since we have met each other. We were worried if we couldn’t recognize each other’s faces, but it was no problem. We talked about our childhood’s memories and what we have been doing lately at a fugu restaurant, Uoichi. It was a great time. Their food was very delicious and I especially liked their fried fugu and zosui which is a special Japanese dish. The restaurant had a homey atmosphere and the staff were very kind. If you have a chance to go to Kurume, I recommend this restaurant.

壱岐島 Ikinoshima

博多港から約70分の壱岐島へ高速船ヴィーナスで渡りました。
美しい白い砂浜と青い海、夏の海水浴の時期に賑わう島です。なので季節柄、観光客はいません。どこへ行っても「お仕事で来られたんですか？」と聞かれました。レンタカーを借りて博多の友人の案内で一周しました。風はとても冷たかったですが、高い所から見る景色はとても素晴しかった。海産物はもちろんのこと、家畜もいて、野菜やお米も取れるので、自給自足が出来る島だそうです。多くの史跡や神社、温泉もあり、人々が心豊かに生活しているのが分かりました。

I went over from the Hakata port to Ikinoshima for about 70 minutes by the high-speed ship Venus. The island has some beautiful white sandy beaches and a blue ocean so it’s very popular there in summer. There weren’t any tourists because of the season. That’s why people asked me “ Did you come here for your business?” My friend guided me around the island by rent-a-car. The wind was very cold but I saw some great scenery from high places. Of course, there was good seafood, livestock, vegetables and rice. I heard that people can be self-sufficient there. And also there are many historical places, shrines and hot springs. I knew that people enjoy their life with rich spirit.

九州 Kyusyu

福岡空港から博多へは地下鉄がとても便利です。初日は、大宰府にお参りしてから近くの九州国立博物館へ行きました。大宰府は学問の神様で、受験シーズンのせいか大勢の人が来ていました。博物館は、山の中にあるのですが長いエスカレーターを乗り継いで行くと、そこに巨大な近代的建物が現れます。展示物も豊富で、改めて日本の長い歴史を感じました。その後行った福岡タワーからの眺めは素晴らしかったです。次回は、壱岐の様子をお話します。

The subway is very convenient to go to Hakata from Fukuoka airport. For the first day, I went to Dazaifu shrine and Kyusyu national museum. Dazaifu is the god of learning and there were many people because of the season. We have a lot of entrance examination for schools this period in Japan. The museum is in a mountain and we can go there by some long escalators. After that, a huge modern building appears. There were many exhibits that made me remember the long history of Japan again. And also I saw great some scenery from Fukuoka tower. Next time, I’ll tell you about Iki island.

キルトフェスティバル Quilt Festival

東京国際キルトフェスティバル2008を見て来ました。
会場は、水道橋にある東京ドームで野球の試合やコンサートなどが行われるところです。とても広い場所に数多くの作品が出展されていました。大勢の人が見に来ていて、特に「日本キルト大賞」の作品の前は混んでいてゆっくり見ることは出来ませんでした。スウェーデンのアンティークキルトも見ることが出来ました。素晴らしい作品を見て、以前習っていた刺繍をまたやってみたくなりました。
ところで、キルトとパッチワークはどこが違うのだろう？

I went to see the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2008.
It was held the Tokyo Dome in Suidobashi where we can see baseball games, concerts and so on. Tokyo Dome is huge and there were many handiworks. I couldn’t see the “Japan Quilt Grand Prix” slowly because many people were there. I also saw antique Swedish quilts there. After I saw many great handiworks, I wanted to learn embroidery again. By the way, I’m just wondering what's the different between making a quilt and doing patchwork?

マスク Masks

この時期、日本では当たり前に見かけるマスク姿の人々を、アメリカ人は不思議に思うそうです。私たちは、風邪をひいて咳が出る時などはマスクをかけます。特に大勢の人と一緒に乗る電車やバスの中では、他人に風邪をうつさないためのマナーです。アメリカではある法律によって風邪や咳が出る時もマスクをかける習慣はありません。この後、日本では花粉症の人々がマスクをかけ始めます。あなたの国ではどうですか？

We usually can see people who wear masks everywhere in Japan during this season, but American people think it’s strange. We wear masks when we have a cold or a cough. Especially, in the train or on the bus we wear them because there are many people around us. We think it’s not good manners to give our colds to other people. People aren’t accustomed to wearing masks for colds or when they have a cough in America because of the anti-mask law. After this season, people in Japan who have hay fever will begin wearing masks. How about in your country?

鏡開き Kagami-biraki

２月１１日は、鏡開きの日です。
この行事は、家族の円満を願って新年に神様に供えていた大きな丸い餅を切って食べる慣習です。この餅のことを、鏡餅と言います。我が家でも、鏡餅を使ってお汁粉をつくりました。


January 11th is the day of Kagami-biraki.
This event is the custom of cutting and eating a large, round rice cake, which had been offered to the gods before the New Year asking for a peaceful family in the new year. We call this rice cake Kagami-mochi. I made a sweet red-bean soup from pieces of this Kagami-mochi.

展覧会 Exhibition

友人の紹介で、前田　和さんの個展に行ってきました。
その友人は彼のファンであり、今回の展覧会を紹介してくれました。「百聞は一見にしかず」だと思いました。パンフレットにたくさんの素敵な作品が載っていましたが、写真では表し切れない素晴らしい作品ばかりでした。自然の草・花・木を陶板に焼き付け、色づけする奥の深い芸術品です。友人と共にお話をした前田先生はとても温厚な方で、先生のお人柄がすべての作品に表れていると思いました。

I went to the personal exhibition of Kazu Maeda, who is a great artist.
My friend is his biggest fan and she introduced his exhibition to me. I thought “Seeing is believing”. There were many great handiworks in his brochure that show his great works that no photographer can reproduce. He uses natural grass, flowers and trees. He bakes them into clay and paints them. I talked to Mr. Maeda with my friend, and I realized that he was a good-natured person. I thought his art expressed his personality.

ベジタリアン Vegetarian

私の生徒にベジタリアンがいます。彼女は13歳の時に自分で決めてお肉や魚類を食べるのを止めたそうです。彼女の家族はベジタリアンではなく、彼女のお母さんは始めすぐにギブアップするだろうと考えていたそうです。彼女の意志の強さに感心しています。
とてもフレンドリーな彼女に誘われて吉祥寺のベジタリアンレストランへ行きました。初めて食べたヨギバーガーやピザはとても美味しかった。豆の粉、野菜、スパイスで作るハンバーグパテは、本当のお肉のようでした。彼女のお友だちも一緒でおしゃべりも楽しく写真を撮るのをすっかり忘れました。残念！

I have a student who is a vegetarian. She decided to stop eating meat and fish when she was thirteen years old. At first, her mother thought she would eventually give up because all the members of her family were not vegetarians, but she persisted. Because of this, I’m impressed. She is very friendly. She invited me to a vegetarian restaurant in Kichijoji. I ate a yogi burger and a vegetarian pizza for the first time, and they were delicious. The hamburger patty was made from soybean powder, vegetables and spices, but it seemed like real meat. I enjoyed eating and chatting with her and her friends, so I completely forgot to take pictures of the food. That’s a shame!

日本語能力試験 JLPT

生徒の一人が日本語能力試験の2級を受けました。彼女は英語の教師をしています。毎日仕事が忙しいのに頑張って勉強をしていました。急に寒くなったからか、試験前に風邪を引いてしまい体調が少し悪かったのですが、前日まで私のレッスンを受けました。
試験当日、一人では心細いだろうと思い試験会場まで一緒に行きました。アジア系の人々、特に中国人が多く受けに来ていると思いました。彼女は深呼吸をしてから試験場へ入りました。合格を祈るばかりです。

One of my students took the Level 2 Japanese Language Proficiency Test. She is an English teacher. She was busy everyday but also studied hard for the test. The weather suddenly became cold so she caught a cold before the test. She was feeling a little under the weather but she still took my lesson the day before the test. On the day of the test, I went with her because I thought she was nervous. There were many Asian people, especially, Chinese. After she took a deep breath, she entered. I prayed for her success.

バッドかノット・バッド Bad or Not bad

英語と日本語の語順が違うので、会話の時に注意して聞いていないと時々誤解をしてしまいます。英語の場合、先に肯定または否定の言葉が来ます。日本語の場合は最後の言葉を聞いて相手の意向が分かります。例えば、「ノット・バッド」と言ったのに始めの「ノット」を聞き落としたら「バッド」だけ聞くことになります。つまり「悪くないよ」と言っていたのに誤解して「悪い」と解釈してしまうのです。私は以前この経験をして、始めにとてもがっかりした後に本当のことがわかって喜んだことがあります。

The English and Japanese word orders are totally different. If I don’t pay attention to my conversation in English, I sometimes misunderstand. In English, there are positive or negative words in the beginning of sentences. In Japanese, I understand their intentions when I hear the last words. For instance, when someone said ‘Not bad’ and if I missed the word ‘not’ and only heard the word ‘bad’. I misunderstood their opinion and misinterpreted this as meaning not good. I’ve had this experience and was very disappointed, but later I was gratified after I understood its exact meaning.

サンクスギビングディナー Thanksgiving Dinner

生徒に誘われて渋谷のレストランでサンクスギビングディナーを初めて食べました。
メニューは、ロブスター・ビスク、サラダ、ローストターキーのグレービーソース、マッシュポテト、インゲン、クランベリーソースそしてバニラアイスクリーム添えのパンプキンパイでした。私達、日本人は鶏肉をよく食べますが、七面鳥にはあまり馴染みがありません。食べてみて、鶏肉よりもあっさりしていると思いました。とてもボリュームがあってお腹がいっぱいになりました。アメリカでは、家族や親戚が家に集まって食事をする日だそうです。家族行事で生徒達は懐かしいと言って美味しそうに食べていました。私もその雰囲気と会話をとても楽しみました。ごちそうさま。

I went to a restaurant in Shibuya for Thanksgiving dinner. My students took me there and it was my first experience. There were lobster bisque, green salad, roast turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream for the dinner. Japanese usually eat chicken, and we aren’t so familiar with turkey. I thought turkey wasn’t oilier than chicken. The dinner was hearty so my stomach was very full. I heard American people have the dinner with family and relatives at their homes on Thanksgiving Day. It’s a kind of family event. My students enjoyed it and they said it brought back memories. I also enjoyed the atmosphere and conversation with them. Gochisosama.

健康のバロメーター Health indicator

私は歩くのがとても早いようだ。
友達と歩く時は気をつけてゆっくりと歩いているつもりでも、早いと言われる。ということは、一人で歩く時はもっと早いのだ。
ところが、今夏「どうしたの、ずいぶんゆっくり歩いているね」と何度か言われた。もちろん、暑さのせいもあったけれど、やはり体調が優れなかったことを思い出した。人にはそれぞれ健康のバロメーターがあるけれど、私の場合は、歩く早さでわかるようだ。あなたの健康のバロメーターは何ですか？
※面白いことに、日本語でいう健康のバロメーターは英語では健康のインディケーターといいます。

It seems like I walk too fast.
When I walk with my friends, I usually care about their pace and try to walk slowly. But they always say I walk too fast. So when I walk alone, I usually walk even faster.
This summer, I heard several times, “Why do you walk so slowly? What’s wrong with you?” from my friends. Of course it was because of the hot weather, but on the other hand, I remember my condition was bad. People have their own health indicator. In my case it is my walking pace. How about you?
※We say “kenko no barometer” in Japanese. It means “health indicator” in English.

歯医者 Dentists

歯が腫れてとても痛く、抜くことになりました。私の家の近所には数件の歯医者があります。１ヵ月程前に歯が痛かったので、そのうちの１軒の歯医者へ行きました。ただ抗生物質と痛み止めの薬をくれただけでした。２回通いましたが良くならず不信になりやめてしまいました。その時期は、公私共にとても忙しい時期だったので痛み止めを飲んで我慢していました。やっと時間が出来、痛みもひどくなって来たので職場から通うのに便利な歯科へ行きました。今回はレントゲンの結果でかなり悪い歯の状態がわかり、すぐに抜歯になりました。もっと早く行けば良かった。信頼できる良い歯医者を見つけることは大変だと思いました。

I had a tooth pulled at a dentist because my gum had been swollen and I was in a lot of pain. There are several dentists near my house. I went to one of them about a month ago because I had a toothache. The dentist only gave me antibiotics and pain killers. I went there twice but my toothache didn’t get better. I couldn’t trust him so I stopped going there. At that time, I was very busy both officially and privately so I settled for painkillers. Finally, I had time and the pain became worse than before, so I went to another dentist that was conveniently located near my workplace. This time, immediately I knew my tooth’s situation was very bad from the X-ray results. I had to have it pulled out right away. I should’ve gone there sooner. I think it’s difficult to find a dentist that I can respect and trust.

パンズ・ラビリンス Pan’s Labyrinth

おとぎ話のような映画です。
この映画をトロントからの帰りの飛行機の中で見ました。でも途中で成田空港に着いてしまい最後まで見ることが出来ませんでした。その時はとても心残りでしたが、最近東京で上映が始まったので早速見てきました。飛行機の中では、スペイン語に英語の字幕だったので細かいところまで理解出来ませんでしたが、今回はよく分かりました。
１人の少女が正直者だけが住んでいる王国の王女として戻るために３つの試練を受けます。パンや妖精が出て来て童話のようですが、残酷なシーンもあるため大人向けの作品だと思います。芥川龍之介の「杜子春」を思い出しました。お薦めの映画です。
でも最後まで見て、私は飛行機の中で９８％見終わっていたことに気がつきました。

This movie is a kind of fairy tale.
I saw this movie on the plane from Toronto and I couldn’t see the whole thing because I arrived at Narita airport before it ended. I was so disappointed. Recently the theaters started showing this movie in Tokyo, so I immediately went to see it. They spoke Spanish and the movie had English subtitles on the plane so I couldn’t understand the details, but this time they were clear.
A girl had to face three hardships before returning to her kingdom as a princess where only honest people live. There was a Pan and some nymphs, so it seemed like a children’s story, but there were also some violent scenes so I thought it was for adults. This movie reminded me of the book, “Toshishun” by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. I recommend that you see this movie. By the way, the reason why I was disappointed was because after I saw the movie, I realized that I had seen 98% of it on the plane.

ユーチューブ YouTube

ロンドンから休暇で来ていた以前の生徒とその友人が我が家に遊びに来ました。山登りが好きな彼は、東京にいた時も色々な山に登りに行っていました。このユーチューブは、その彼が今年の春にモロッコでトゥブカル山に登った時の映像です。とても素晴らしかったそうです。イギリスのお土産で紅茶とショートブレッドをもらいました。ショートブレッドは、スコットランドのお菓子でとても濃厚な味で美味しかったです。

One of my former students and his friend visited me from London during their vacation. He likes mountain-climbing and had climbed some mountains when he lived in Tokyo.　This YouTube is the film from when he climbed Toubkal in Morocco this spring. He said it was great. He gave me some tea and shortbread as souvenirs from England. The shortbread is Scottish. It was sweet and very rich in taste.

オアフ島 Oahu

マウイ島からオアフ島のワイキキへ移動しました。
マウイ島ではホテルに泊まりましたが、ワイキキでは交通も便利でコンドミニアムを利用しました。コンドーは、冷蔵庫、電子レンジ、鍋、コーヒーメーカー、食器類などの台所用品は揃っています。毎日タオル換えとベッドメイキングはしてくれるので、豪華さはありませんがホテルの部屋よりも広くて、私たち家族は気に入っています。チェックインをして早速トロリーに乗って食料の買出しに行きました。わぁ！ドンキホーテがありました。以前ダイエースーパーだったところですが、内容は以前とほぼ同じで日本の食料品が豊富でした。その晩、家族はスーパーのお惣菜、私はブログで知り合った2人の女性と素敵なレストランでディナー。まぁ、たまにはいいでしょう！！
今回の旅行でスキューバダイビングをして海亀を見たり、フラダンスを習ったりしました。ハワイ在住25年のブログ友達のアヒ･ポキさんからリアルタイムの情報をもらい空軍サンダーバードのコンサートや航空ショーを地元の人達と見ることが出来ました。彼女には大変感謝しています。

My family and I moved to Waikiki, Oahu from Maui.
We stayed a nice hotel in Maui but we used a condominium in Oahu. Their public transportation in Waikiki was convenient. The condo had a fridge, a microwave, pans, a coffee maker, table ware and so on. And they changed our towels and made the beds everyday. The condo was not gorgeous but had more spacious than the hotel. So my family really liked it. After checking in, we went grocery shopping by trolleybus. Wow! There was a Don Quijote. It used to be a Daiei supermarket. They didn’t really change the layout that much and they sold many kinds of Japanese food. For the dinner that day, my family ate the food that we bought and I went to a nice restaurant to see two of my blog friends. Well, I apologize to my family, but it’s okay every once in a while!!
I did scuba diving, saw a sea turtle and learned hula dance while on this trip. I received some rare information from Ahi-Poki-san, a blog friend who has been living in Hawaii for 25 years. We saw a nice concert and the Air Force’s Thunderbirds’ air show with the local people. I’m very grateful for her help.

敬語 Honorific language

日本語には敬語があります。
正しい敬語は、日本の社会におい大切なものだと思っています。
ただ、最近若い人が丁寧に言おうとするあまり変な敬語を使うことが多くなってきているように思います。それが電話の応対になると、とても厄介で、まわりくどい表現で大事なポイントがよくつかめない。先日、ある銀行に問い合わせをした時にこの経験をしました。日本人である私でさえもわかりにくいのに、外国人にとってはなおさらでしょう。かなり日本語を理解している生徒でも敬語は難しいと言います。彼らは自分が敬語を使うためでなく、まず理解するために勉強しています。もし敬語を使うなら、私達日本人は正しく使わなければいけないですね。

There is Keigo (honorific language) in Japanese.
I think that using Keigo words correctly in the Japanese society is very important. Recently young people tend to use these words, but they don't know how to use them correctly. Therefore they use roundabout expressions and I don't understand what they want to say. It's especially difficult on the phone. I experienced this when I talked with a staff member of a bank over the phone. I think this is even more difficult for foreigners. My students who understand Japanese very well say Keigo is very difficult. They study it to better understand it, not to use it. We Japanese must use Keigo correctly if we're going to use it.

マウイ島 Maui

成田から約7時間でホノルル空港に、その後国内線で30分間のフライトでマウイ島のカパルア空港に着きました。このとても小さなローカルな空港から私のハワイ旅行が始まりました。ホテルからは車で10分間というとても便利な空港でした。滞在したカアナパリは、のんびりとリラックスした所で、オアフ島のワイキキと比べると日本人がほとんどいません。公共の交通機関がほとんどないので、レンタカーを借りてさとうきびの会社、イアオ渓谷、地元のショッピングモール、昔ながらの雰囲気を残すラハイナを回りました。今、日本では90分待ちが当たり前のクリスピークリームドーナツを全く並ばずに食べました。おいしい、でも甘かった！！

I took a 7-hour flight from Narita to Honolulu airport and then a transfer to a 30-minute-domestic flight to Kapalua, Maui. My Hawaiian vacation started from this very small and local airport. The airport was very convenient because it was 10 minutes by car from my hotel. The area and atmosphere in Kaanapali where I stayed was very comfortable and laid-back. If I compared this area to Waikiki, Oahu, there were definitely fewer Japanese tourists. There were very few modes of transportation, so I rented a car. I went to a sugarcane company, Iao Valley, a local shopping mall and Lahaina which has retained most of its old Hawaiian atmosphere. I also had a chance to eat Krispy Kreme doughnuts without having to wait in a 90-minute line which is the norm in Japan right now. They were good, but too sweet!!

ライブ A Live

梶原もも子さんのライブに六本木へ行ってきました。
彼女の事は前に私のブログでも紹介した事があります。ニューヨークで本格的に歌やダンスを勉強中でミュージカルスターになるために頑張っています。今回は、岩波理恵さんと一緒のライブでソロはもちろんのこと、二人のお話も楽しく、デュエットも素晴らしくあっという間の1時間でした。特にもも子さんがソロで歌ったオペラ座の怪人の１曲は、彼女の美しい歌声を際立たせていました。最近結婚もなさって、ますますこれからの活躍が期待されています。

I went to Momoko Kajiwara’s live in Roppongi. I’ve introduced her on my blog before. She’s seriously been training to become a singer, a dancer, a musical star and so on in New York. This time, she had a 1-hour live with Rie Iwanami. We enjoyed their solo performances, duet and conversations with the audience.
I felt the hour passed very quickly. Momoko sang solo a song from ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and it accentuated her beautiful voice. Recently she got married and everyone's hoping she becomes very successful.

10円まんじゅう 10 yen Manju

最近、入院している親戚を見舞うために浅草にある病院へよく行きます。雷門から仲見世、浅草寺を通って行きます。ここは外国からお客様が来れば必ず案内をするところですが、日本人の目から見ても独特の雰囲気のあるところだと思っています。それで日本の各地域からの観光客も来ています。先日その浅草で、1個10円のおまんじゅうを見つけました。安いでしょ。一口で食べられるとても小さなものですが、なかなか美味しいんです。黒糖まんじゅうと大福の2種類あります。

Recently I’ve been going to a hospital in Asakusa a lot to visit a close relative. I always go through Kaminarimon gate, Nakamise shopping mall and Sensoji-temple. When I have foreign guests, I always take them there. Even though I’m Japanese, I think Asakusa’s atmosphere is unique. So there are many tourists from everywhere, from Japan as well. I found a Japanese sweet there for ten yen called the ten-yen manju. It’s cheap, isn’t it? Its size is very small and I can eat it in one bite. It’s delicious. There are two types; brown sugar lump and Daifuku.

夏バテ Natsu-Bate

この言葉にぴったりの英語はないようです。日本の夏の蒸し暑さで食欲がなくなり、外気温と冷房の効いた室内との温度差に体調を崩します。私は、長かった梅雨の終わり頃から既にこの状態で、おまけに夏風邪までひいて声がハスキーにその後ほとんど出なくなりました。こんなにひどい状態は初めてでしたが、やっと治りました。東京の今年の夏は異常に暑いです。皆様もどうぞお体を大切にお過ごし下さい!

I don’t know if there is the same word in English, but it means to suffer from the summer heat. People usually lose their appetite because of the humid summer in Japan. And people become sick because of the differences between the temperature outside and their air-conditioned rooms. I’ve had Natu-Bate since the end of this year’s long rainy season. Plus, I became hoarse and lost my voice because I caught a cold. I’ve never been in such a bad condition before. I’ve finally recovered. This summer is extremely hot in Tokyo. Please take care of yourself!

自然の美しさ The beauty of nature

トロント Toronto

ケベックからトロントへ移動ました。
それまで周りで聞こえていたフランス語が、すべて英語になりました。トロントは日本で言うと名古屋くらいの大きさの都市だと思いました。初日、メジャーリーグに参加しているというトロント・ブルージェイズとロサンゼルス・ドジャーズの試合を見ました。野球はあまり知りませんが、レモネードとホットドッグを食べながらの観戦はとても面白かったです。次の日は、ナイアガラの滝を見に行きました。「百聞は一見にしかず」、すごい迫力！トロント市内には大きなチャイナタウンを始めグリークタウン、ポルトガル人街、ポーリッシュタウンなどがあって、色々な人種の集まっているところでした。
職場の先生方の学会に便乗して行ったカナダでしたが、お天気に恵まれ、楽しく過ごすことが出来ました。ラッキーでした！

We moved to Toronto from Quebec.
I’ve heard a lot of French in Quebec, but in Toronto, I started to hear English. I thought Toronto was almost the same size as Nagoya in Japan. The first day, we saw the Toronto Blue Jays' baseball game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Toronto Blue Jays is a major league baseball team. I don’t know much about baseball, but I enjoyed the game, eating a hotdog and drinking lemonade. The next day, we went to see Niagara Falls. “Seeing is believing.” It was spectacular! There was a large China town, a Greek town, a Portuguese village, a Polish town and so on, and many kinds of people.
I went to Canada with my co-workers who had a congress in Quebec. I really enjoyed the trip and the nice weather. I was lucky!

ケベック郊外ツアー The tour of Quebec suburbs

カナダ開拓時代からの田園風景が残るオルレアン島へは、1本しかない長い橋を車で行きました。広い農場や牧場、メープルの森があり、新鮮なイチゴや色々なジャム、ドレッシングなども売っていました。私達は、凍ったリンゴのジュースを買いました。美味しかったです。メープルシロップを作っているところや赤と白で出来た代表的なカナダの住宅、教会、かわいいパン屋さんなど、のどかな景色が続いていました。戸外では短い夏を楽しむお年寄りが読書をしていたり、素敵なところでした。その後、聖アンナの聖堂を見学して、モンモランシーの滝まで行きました。

Orlean Island has remained a rural area from Canada’s pioneer days. We drove over a bridge that was the only way to get to the island. There were many big farms, ranches and many maple forests. They were selling fresh strawberries, various jams and some dressings. We bought some frozen apple juice. It was delicious. We saw a place for making maple syrup, some typical Canadian houses, a church, a lovely bakery and so on. The typical Canadian house is red and white. There were some old people outside who were enjoying the short summer reading books. It was very peaceful. After that we went to the cathedral of Saint Anne and Montmorency falls.

カナダ Canada

初めてカナダへ行って、ケベックとトロントを観光してきました。
日本からケベックへの直通便はないのでトロントで国内便に乗り換えました。ケベックの公用語はフランス語、街中の表示もフランス語です。ただ若い人は英語も話すので、ホテルやレストランなどで困る事はありませんでした。ケベック市は小さくて、主要な場所は歩いて回れるヨーロッパの雰囲気をもつ興味深いところでした。シャトー・フロンテナックやノートルダム大聖堂がある城壁に囲まれた場所は、世界遺産にもなっています。芸術家も集まるところらしく、多くの楽しい壁画もありました。
次回は、ケベック郊外のお話をします。

I went to Canada and did sightseeing in Quebec and Toronto for the first time.
There aren’t any direct flights from Japan to Quebec so I had to transfer to a domestic airline at Toronto. People speak French and their signs are almost all in French in Quebec. But young people speak English, so I didn’t have any problems at the hotels and the restaurants. Quebec City wasn’t big so I was able to look around the city and at some famous places on foot. It was a very interesting place because of the European atmosphere. The Château Frontenac and Notre-Dame de Québec were inside the walls of the city and they are world heritages. There were many interesting wall paintings by local artists.
I’ll tell about the suburbs of Quebec next time.

茶芸 Chinese tea ceremony

台湾茶を茶芸に沿って頂きました。まず、香りを楽しみ、次に味を楽しみます。日本の茶道ほどはむずかしくはありません。茶芸も中国式と台湾式では少し違うそうです。一緒に頂いた飲茶も美味しかったです。コーヒーを飲むことが多い私ですが、お茶飲んでゆっくり過ごすのも良いものだなと思いました。

I had Taiwanese tea at a Chinese tea ceremony. At first, I enjoyed the aroma and next the flavor. The ceremony’s simpler than the Japanese tea ceremony. I heard the Chinese and the Taiwanese method are a little different. I also had some dim sum at the same time. They were delicious. I usually drink a lot of coffee, but sometimes it’s really good to spend time relaxing with a cup or glass of tea.

再会 Meeting again

昨年アメリカに帰ったジョンさんとフィアンセのヘザーさんが東京に来ることになり、会いました。ベトナムレストランでランチの後、場所を変えてお友達も加わって楽しくおしゃべりをしました。私は、ジョンさんを通して色々な人と知り合いになり、とてもいい人間関係が出来たことに感謝しています。ありがとう。

※来月、カナダへ行くことになりました。ケベックとトロントへ行く予定です。

I saw John and his fiancée Heather in Tokyo who went back to the U.S. last year. We ate lunch at a Vietnamese food restaurant after that we went to another place to meet some other friends. We enjoyed chatting very much. I became acquainted with many nice people through John. And I still have a good relationship with them. I’m really thankful to him. Thank you, John.

三ツ星レストラン A Three-star Restaurant

ミシュランのガイド書で40年以上、三ツ星を維持しているボキューズ氏のフランス、リヨンにあるレストランが、世界で初めて日本の国立新美術館にオープンしました。その名前は、「ブラッスリー　ポール・ボキューズ　ミュゼ」。モネを鑑賞した後、友人と夕食を食べました。うーん、さすがに美味しかった。ただ、お店の雰囲気が落ち着かないことが残念でした。美術館の中にあるレストランだからしょうがないのでしょうが、照明が明るすぎて、夜景もよく見えませんでした。ランチはリーズナブルなようですが、かなり並ぶそうです。

One of the three-star restaurants in Michelin’s Guide Book that Mr. Bocuse has run in Lyon, France for over 40years opened at the National Art Center in Japan for the first time. The name of the restaurant is ‘Brasserie Paul Bocuse Le Musee’. After I enjoyed the Monet exhibition, I ate dinner with my friend. Hmm, it was delicious as I expected, but it’s a shame that the restaurant’s atmosphere was uncomfortable because maybe it’s inside the museum. There were a lot of lights there so we couldn’t see night view very well. Their lunch price is reasonable but you have to wait for a long time.

モネの展覧会 Monet Exhibition

今年の1月に出来たばかりの六本木にある国立新美術館でモネの展覧会を見てきました。
美術館へ行くのは久しぶりでした。18時から19時までの約1時間、ゆっくりとモネを鑑賞する事が出来ました。その美術館では、金曜日だけ20時まで開館しています。TVニュースで、日中はとても混んでいると言っていたのでラッキーでした。絵画には全く詳しくないので、私が好きか、嫌いかだけで見ています。有名な作品がたくさんある中で、特に印象に残ったのは、「かささぎ」という作品でした。雪景色の中の陽の光の描き方がすばらしいと思いました。
機会があったら、是非見てみて下さい。
次回は、ディナーを食べたその美術館にあるレストランのお話をします。

I went to the Monet Exhibition at the National Art Center, in Roppongi in Tokyo. This museum opened this January. It’s been a while since I’ve visited a museum. I could appreciate Monet’s art for about an hour (from 6 p.m-7 p.m.). The museum stays open until 8 p.m. only on Fridays. According a TV news program, the exhibition’s been very crowded during the daytime so I was lucky. I don’t know much about art and I usually just look at everything whether I like them or not. There were many famous works there and I was very impressed by ‘The Magpie’. It was one of his greatest paintings, a scene with the reflection of the sun light in the snow. When you have a chance, please take a look at it.
I’ll tell you about the restaurant there that I had dinner at in my next blog.

ドーナツ Doughnuts

「クリスピークリームドーナツ」が新宿にオープンして以来、週末は依然２時間待たないと買うことが出来ません。つまり、私は当分の間、食べられないということです。そのせいか、最近ドーナツがちょっと気になっています。同じ新宿駅の構内では、ニューヨークからきた「ドーナツプラント」のドーナツを買うことが出来ます。お店でお勧めのバニラビーンズを食べてみました。普通のドーナツの2倍くらいの大きさで、少し高めの￥320。ドーナツというよりもパンに近い食感です。小麦粉や砂糖は、自然の素材を大事にして作っているんだそうですが、コーティングがすぐに溶けてしまうのが残念。
次は、先月末にオープンした六本木の東京ミッドタウン内の「ベルベリー」で東ヨーロッパからのルーマニアンドーナツに、トライしようと思っています。

After ‘Krispy Kreme Doughnuts’ opened, we still have to wait to buy them for two hours on the weekend. It means I can’t eat them for a while. So recently I care a little about doughnuts. You can buy ‘Doughnuts Plant’ doughnuts from New York inside Shinjuku station. I ate their ‘Vanilla beans’ doughnut that the staff recommended. They’re almost twice the size and a little expensive, ￥320. They taste like bread rather than doughnuts. They think flour and sugar are very important for making doughnuts. But it’s a shame that the sugar coating melts so quickly.
Next, I’m going to eat Rumanian doughnuts from East Europe. You can eat them in ‘Belbery’ at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi that opened last month.

ガウディの舌 Tongue of Gaudi

銀座で、友人と偶然見つけたレストランです。
その名の通り、スペイン料理のお店です。カメラを持っていなかったので、残念ながらお料理の写真は撮りませんでした。サングリアを飲みながら、小皿料理をつまんで、パエリアを待ちます。パエリアは、注文してから作り始めるので、熱々でとても美味しい。ミックスパエリアを注文しましたが、ムール貝をはじめ、えび、いかなどの魚介類が多く入っていました。もし行くなら前もって、予約をしたほうがいいかもしれません。

My friend and I coincidentally found this restaurant in Ginza.
From its name, you know it’s a Spanish restaurant. Unfortunately we didn’t have any cameras so we couldn’t take pictures of the food. While we were waiting for our paella, we enjoyed a glass of Sangria and some small dishes. They started making the paella immediately after we ordered it. It was very hot and delicious. We ordered a mixed-paella with many types of seafood, like: moule, prawns and squid. If you decide to go there, I think you should make your reservation a few days in advance.

ジョーバ JOBA

ジョーバは、最近、日本で人気のフィットネス機器です。
乗馬している状態で15分間のエクササイズ。メーカーの説明によると、姿勢が良くなり、腹筋、背筋が鍛えられ、ダイエット効果もあるとのこと。ウエスト、ヒップ、脚力などのコースが選べます。ジムに3台あるので、私も必ず乗っていますが、ただバランスをとっていれば良いので楽ちんです。でも、壁に向かって15分間のエクササイズはつまらないので、草原か何かの写真を貼ってくれないかな～と思っています。ジョーバという名前は、乗馬の発音から来ているのでしょう。この他にも違うメーカーから、ロデオボーイという同様の商品が出ています。だんだん本当の馬にも上手に乗れそうな気がしてきました。
楽して、エクササイズ！果たして、その効果は？３ヶ月後くらいにまたご報告します。

Recently, Joba’s a popular fitness machine in Japan.
You can use it to do horseback riding exercises for fifteen minutes.
According to the maker’s explanation, you can use it to train the abdominal and back muscles. It’ll also improve your posture and it has a positive effect on your diet as well. You can choose the exercise course you’d like. For example: waist, hips, stronger legs and so on. There are three machines in my gym so I always use one. It’s easy because all I have to do is use the proper balance. But it’s boring for me to do this exercise in front of the wall, so I wish they’d hang some pictures of grassy plains or something on the walls in front of it. I think Joba stands for the pronunciation of joba (meaning to ride a horse) in kanji. Another maker sells almost the same product and calls it Rodeo Boy. I'm gradually beginning to feel that I can ride a horse very well. It’s an easy exercise! You want to know how effective is it? I’ll tell you in three months.

チョコバー Chocolate bar

私は、チョコバーが大好きです。
若い頃は、虫歯を気にしながら、最近は、高カロリーを心配しながらも止められません。 ソニープラザで、色々な国のチョコバーを見つけることが出来ますが、コストコで見つけたミニチョコバーの詰め合わせの袋には、アメリカ、マーズ社の5つのタイプが入っています。Twix、SNICKERS、3Musketeers、Milky Way、Milky Way Midnight
です。一口タイプなので、少しずつ違う味を楽しめます。うぁ～甘い！でも、3年前にハワイ島で食べた「whatchamacallit」というチョコバーは、その後見つけられません。
チョコバーの事を、アメリカ英語では、キャンディーバーと言うと聞きました。

I like chocolate bars very much.
When I was young I cared about cavities, and recently, I worry about high calories, but I can’t stop eating it. We can find chocolate bars that are from many countries at Sony Plaza. I found a package of mini chocolate bars made by an American company called Mars in Costco. There are 5 types; Twix, SNICKERS, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way and Milky Way Midnight. One piece is a mouthful and you can enjoy the different tastes at the same time. Whoa～sweet! But I can’t find the candy bar called ‘whatchamacallit’ that I ate in Hawaii island three years ago.

I heard that American people call them candy bars instead of chocolate bars.

バルト9 WALD 9

２月に新宿に出来た新しい映画館です。
丸井のビルの9階から13階までに9つの劇場とイベント用のステージやカフェが入っています。私は、技術的なことはわかりませんが、デジタルでの上映、高度な音響効果をすべての劇場に備え付けているそうです。見やすく、心地良い座席シートでした。高いところにあるので夜景がとてもきれいなエンタテイメント・コンプレックスです。私は、ここで「パフューム」を見ました。WALDとは、ドイツ語で「森」という意味です。

WALD 9 is a new movie theater in Shinjuku that opened in February.
There are nine theaters, a stage for events and some cafes from the ninth to the thirteenth floor of the Marui building. I don’t know much about the technical details, but the theaters use digital screens and very sophisticated sound effects. Their seats are comfortable and you can easily see the screen. You can enjoy the wonderful night view from there. It’s an entertainment complex. I saw ‘Perfume’ there. WALD means ‘forest’ in German.

そのうそは何色？ What’s the color of the lie?

「うそ」の表現に、色を使うことがあります。
日本語に、「真っ赤な嘘」というのがあり、「まったくの嘘」を表します。この赤には、「完全な」という意味があります。韓国でも同じ表現があるそうです。英語には、「黒い嘘」があり、「たちの悪いうそ」になり、それに対して、「白いうそ」というのは、「罪のない嘘」になります。1000以上あると言われているインドで話されている言語のひとつでは、「緑色の嘘」というのがあって、やはり「まったくの嘘」の意味になるそうです。でもフランス語では、そういう色を使う嘘の表現はないそうです。色に対する考え方は、国の文化や言語によってかなり違いがあるので面白いと思います。
ところで、あなたのその嘘は何色ですか？(^_-)

When we tell a lie, we use some colors.In Japanese, we tell ‘a red lie’ that means ‘an absolute lie’. This color red expresses ‘complete or absolute’. Korean also has the same expression. In English, they have a ‘black lie’ this means ‘a bad lie’. On the other hand, they have ‘a white lie’ which means ‘a harmless or small lie’. One of the 1000 Indian languages has ‘a green lie’. It also means ‘an absolute lie’. But there isn't this kind of expression of lie in French. It’s interesting to know the different ways of thinking among cultures and languages about colors.

女性向けの映画 Chick flick

試写会で、「ホリデイ」という映画を見ました。
ロスアンジェルスの豪邸に住むアマンダとロンドン郊外の小さなかわいい家に住むアイリスが、お互いの家を交換して、2週間のクリスマス休暇を過ごすことになります。それぞれが傷ついた心を癒すための休暇です。ありがちなハッピーエンドのお話ですが、インターネットで顔も知らない相手とメールでやりとりをしてすぐに話がまとまってしまうストリーが今風だなと思いました。アメリカとイギリスの英語の発音の違いも聞けて興味深かったです。日本公開は、3月24日から。Chick Flickという言葉は、私の生徒が教えてくれました。ありがとう。

I saw the movie ‘Holiday’ at a preview.
Amanda lives in a big house in L.A. Iris lives in a small cute house in the suburbs of London. They decided to switch houses for two weeks during the Christmas vacation. They had broken hearts and wanted to heal them. It’s your usual happy-ending, but I think this story is very similar to stories of today. Because they only talked about their plans through e-mails over the internet, so they didn’t know one another. It’s also interesting to hear the differences in pronunciations of American and British English. You can see this movie from March 24th in Japan. My student taught me the expression ‘Chick Flick’. Thanks.

美しい日本料理 Beautiful Japanese Cuisine

先日、友人と「梅芯庵」というレストランへ行ってきました。
140年以上の歴史を持つ和菓子の老舗が開いた和食のお店です。HPの「お品書き」のところを見て下さい。どの料理も本当に美しい！いろいろな種類の野菜を取り入れたメニューが多く、とてもヘルシーでした。一瞬「青汁？」と思った小松菜のスパークリングジュースは、程よい甘さの冷たい飲み物でした。会席コース料理は、少しずつ色々なものが出て来て、目にも楽しく、お腹もいっぱいになりました。最後に料理長さんが挨拶に来てくれて、おまけの「大福」までごちそうになりました。美味しかった！

I went to a restaurant called ‘Baishinan’ with my friend the other day. The Japanese-style confectionary which runs this restaurant has over 140 years of history. Please check out the‘お品書き(menu)’on their HP. Every dish is very beautiful! Their cuisine uses many kinds of vegetables and they are very healthy. At first, I thought it was ‘kale juice?’ but it wasn't. It was sparkling juice made from ‘komatsuna’, a Japanese green vegetable like spinach. It was a moderately sweet and cold drink. The set of dishes served on the individual trays were for entertaining the guests. I could enjoy the dishes with my eyes and I was full. At the end, the chef came to greet us and gave us one of their sweets, ‘Daifuku’. It was delicious!

東京マラソン2007 Tokyo Marathon 2007

今度の日曜日、2月18日に第1回東京マラソンが行われます。
今まで行われていた東京国際マラソンと東京シティロードレースの2つの大会を1つにまとめて、今年初めて行われるアジア最大規模のマラソン大会です。参加者は、3万人の予定です。外国からの選手や市民も大勢参加します。
コースは、東京都庁をスタート地点として、皇居、東京タワー、銀座、浅草雷門、築地などの東京の名所を巡り、東京ビックサイトがゴールの42.195kmです。スタッフ1万人、ボランティア1万人がサポートします。
当日、都心の道路は長い時間規制されるので、家でこのマラソン大会をTVで見ていたほうが良さそうです。

Tokyo Marathon’s first race will be on Sunday, February 18th.　
Until now, there were two marathons, the Tokyo International Marathon and the Tokyo City Road Race, but this year; these marathons merged and formed the biggest race in Asia. The number of entries will be 30 thousand. Many foreign athletes and citizen also will participate. The starting point of the 42.195 km course will be the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building, to the Imperial Palace, the Tokyo Tower, Ginza, Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate, Tsukiji and it will end at the Tokyo Big Sight. These are very popular places in the center of Tokyo. The number of staff will be 10 thousand and also 10 thousand volunteers to support the runners. It’s better to watch it on TV because the traffic will be very congested on that day.

巨大な店 Huge shops

東京の郊外や隣の神奈川、千葉県には外国から来た巨大なお店があります。フランスのカルフール、スウェーデンのイケア、そしてアメリカのコストコなどです。駅から離れているので車で行くのが便利ですが、駐車場も、とにかく広い。カートを押しながらすべての商品を見れば、かなり良い運動が出来ます。日本の店とは違う雰囲気を見るだけでも興味深いと思います。
※コストコだけは、会員制なのでメンバーになるか、メンバーの人と一緒でないと入る事ができません。コストコは、英語ではコスコと発音します。

There are some huge shops that are from foreign countries in the suburbs or next to Tokyo, like Kanagawa and Chiba prefecture. They are Carrefour from France, IKEA from Sweden, Costco from America and so on. It’s convenient to go to them by car because they are a little far from the stations. But they also have huge parking lots. If you look at all their commodities with a shopping cart, you can get some good exercise. I think it’s interesting to compare the difference in atmospheres between Japanese shops and theirs.
※If you want to buy something at Costco, you have to be a member or go there with a member. Costco is pronounced Kosuko in English.

I think I’m going to watch the documentary film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ by former United States Vice President Al Gore.

1周年 1st Anniversary

It’s been a year since I started writing this blog.
When first I started my blog, I decided to write my feelings on things that I noticed around me in Japanese and English. I didn’t know much about blogging. Many people helped me to keep my interest in this blog.I’m glad that I’ve received comments that weren’t only from Japan, but also some foreign countries. To know many things about people through their comments is interesting for me. I would just like to thank everyone and let you know that I’m looking forward to blogging with you all!

東京の手軽な温泉 The Simple and Convenient Hot Springs of Tokyo

最近、東京に天然温泉が増えています。駅の近くや人気スポットなど便利な場所にあって気軽に行く事が出来ます。温泉だけでなく、健康に良いと言われている岩盤浴、ゲルマニウム温浴やタイ、韓国、中国式などのマッサージもあります。また、レストランや休憩室なども充実していて、とても居心地良く出来ています。本当のところ、私はあまり温泉が好きではありませんでした。でも家から車で10～15分で行ける場所へ時々行きます。とても手軽でしょう。


Recently, there are many natural hot spring places in Tokyo. They’re near stations or in popular spots and we can get to them easily. They don’t only have hot springs but also bedrock baths and Germanium warm baths. I’ve heard that they’re good for our health. And they offer many different types of massages, like, Thai, Korea and Chinese. They also have a restaurant and some relaxation rooms. They’re very comfortable. To be honest with you, before, I didn’t like hot springs, but I’m sometimes enjoy going this kind of place because it only takes about 10-15 minutes from my house by car. It sounds very easy, doesn’t it?

ドーナツ Doughnuts

最近、新宿のサザンテラスに「クリスピー・クリーム・ドーナツ」の1号店がオープンしました。お店の前に大勢の人が並んでいて、スタッフの人に聞いたら買うために90分待ちだということでした。東京ディズニーランドの人気アトラクションを待っているようだと思いました。そんなに長く待てない私が食べられるのは、たぶん6ヵ月後くらいでしょう。どれくらい美味しいのかな～。

Recently, the first shop of 'Krispy Kreme Doughnuts' in Japan opened at the Southern Terrance in Shinjuku. There were many people waiting in a long line in front of the shop. I asked one of the staff how long I needed to wait to buy some doughnuts. He said that it would take about 90 minutes. Wow! I thought it was almost the same situation as when I was waiting to ride some popular attractions at Tokyo Disneyland. I don’t want to wait such a long time, so maybe I can eat some six months later. Now I’m just wondering how delicious they are.

イルミネーション Illumination

東京では、あちらこちらでイルミネーションがとてもきれいです。 忙しい年の瀬ですが、思わず足を止めて見とれてしまいます。なんて美しいんでしょう！

We’re having many beautiful illuminations everywhere in Tokyo. I've spent many days working very hard because of the end of the year, but I have to stop and look at them. What beautiful lights!

楽しかったミニ同窓会 Pleasant mini reunion

大学時代に「同じ釜の飯を食った」スキー部の27人と会いました。
長い年月を超えて、すっかり学生時代に戻り楽しい時間でした。それぞれ、卒業
後どうしていたのか、そして近況報告まで話は尽きることなく、一部のメンバーとは二次会、三次会と約9時間過ごしました。何年たっても変わらない関係って素晴らしいなと感じました。そう思いませんか。幹事の一人として久し振りにマネージャーの仕事をしました。一部を貸し切って使わせてくれて、お料理も美味しかった新宿のイタリアンレストラン「オッティモ シーフード ガーデン」、お勧めです。その後、名簿を作ったり、写真を送ったり、やっと終わりました。忙しかった！

I met 27 people who were members of the skiing club of my former college. “We all ate from the same bowl.” Even after so many years, it felt like we were back in school again and we had a really nice time. We talked about what we had done since we graduated and also what we had been doing lately. Our conversation was endless. I went to the second and the third party with some of the members from the first party. All three parties combined lasted about 9 hours. I think we still have really good relationships that will never change. Don’t you think that’s great? I was one of the organizers and I managed this reunion like I did in my school days. I suggested we go to an Italian restaurant called “OTIMO SEAFOOD GARDEN” in Shinjuku. They reserved a part of their restaurant for us, and the food was delicious. After that, I made a list of the members and sent them their pictures. I’ve finally finished. I was very busy!

プラダを着た悪魔 The Devil Wears Prada

「プラダを着た悪魔」を見ました。
同じ女性でも、いろいろな生き方があるなと思いました。今回は、その事について私のコメントを色々と書こうとは思いません。ただ、一つだけ私が思うのは、一度だけの自分の人生だから、自分なりに納得の出来る生き方をしたいという事です。
この映画の中で、ミランダの「それだけ」という言葉がとても印象に残りました。それにしても、メリル・ストリープは、すばらしい。ニューヨークとパリへ行きたくなりました。
それだけ。

I saw 'The Devil Wears Prada'.
I felt that the same woman had many different lifestyles. This time, I’m not going to write any of my comments about it. But I just think that I’ll only live once, so I just want to live the way that satisfies me. In this movie, Miranda’s expression ‘That’s all’ had a strong impression on me. Anyway, Meryl Streep is great! Now I really want to go to New York and Paris.

台湾旅行３ Traveling to Taiwan 3

台北市内を歩いていて思ったのは、町がきれいでとても治安がいいことです。台湾と日本は、ほぼ同じ漢字を使いますが、日本とは意味が違っていました。また現在の日本では使われていない漢字もたくさんあり、英語の表示が助けになりました。横断歩道で、青信号になると残りの秒数と歩いている人が表示されます。残り10秒を切ると、その歩いている人が、駆け足になるのです。何度見ても愉快でした。

When I was walking around Taipei City, I thought the city was clean and safe. Both Japan and Taiwan use almost the same Kanji, but many of their meanings are different. And also there are many Kanji that we don’t use in Japan anymore. That was why the English signs were very helpful. At the crossing there were two signs, one counting down the time left to cross the street and the other showing a man walking. And when the time drops under 10 seconds, the man begins to run. It was interesting and I liked it very much.

コンビニで見つけました。スイカの匂いや味のするピンク色のちょっと変わった飲み物でしたが、現地では普通なのでしょうね。

I found it at a convenience store. The color was pink, and it really smelt and tasted like watermelon. It was a little strange for me, but it was normal there.

キティジェット Kitty jet

親切な人々が多く、楽しい旅行をすることができました。キティちゃんが描かれた飛行機で帰って来ました。おしまい。
I met many kind people there, so I really enjoyed my trip to Taiwan. On the trip back to Japan, I took the Kitty jet back.

台湾旅行２ Traveling to Taiwan 2

観光したところは、台北市内と台湾北部です。台北市内では、故宮博物館で、数多くの素晴らしい美術品を見ることが出来ました。日本で言えば靖国神社のような忠烈祠では、衛兵の交代を間近で見ました。蒋介石を偲ぶ中正紀念堂は、とても広く壮大で、孔子廟や龍山寺では、熱心にお参りをしている人々に会いました。乾物や漢方薬の問屋の集まる迪化街、また世界一高いビル台北101では、夜景がとてもきれいでした。半日使って行った台湾北部では、映画の舞台になったレトロな九份、港の近くの基隆の夜市など、台北市内とはまた違った情緒ある町でした。台湾の食べ物は、お菓子も含めて結構薄味でしたが油っぽくなくとてもヘルシーでした。現地の人に聞いて行ったレストランが、安くて美味しいと思いました。続きは、台湾旅行3で。

We went to Taipei city and northern Taiwan for sightseeing. In Taipei City; we saw many great pieces of art in the National Palace Museum. We saw the changing of the guard at the Martyrs Shrine. It’s like Yasukuni Shrine in Japan. Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall was in honor of his memory was huge and magnificent. I saw many fervent prayers at Confucius Temple and Longshan Temple. There were a lot of wholesalers of dried foods, Chinese herbal medicines and so on at Di-Hua Street. Taipei 101 is the tallest building in the world with a very beautiful night view. We spent half a day in northern Taiwan. We went to Chiufen and Keelung’s night market. Chiufen had retro-flavors and was the locale of a famous movie. Keelung was near the harbor. These cities were nice and had different flavors from Taipei City. Taiwanese food wasn’t greasy and a little bland, but really healthy, including the sweets. We went to some restaurants that were cheap and delicious that the local people recommended to us. Traveling to Taiwan Part 3 to be continued next time.

台湾旅行１ Traveling to Taiwan 1

友人と台湾へ行って来ました。
第一印象は、日本にとても雰囲気の似た国だということです。でも、現在の日本ではなく、少し前の時代の日本です。台湾の人々、また建物や高速道路の構造なども似ていました。台北市内では、日本のデパートやセブンイレブン、ファミリーマートなどコンビニもたくさんあり、どこでも日本のお菓子や雑貨類がおいてありました。牛丼の吉野家もいたるところにあり、マクドナルド、スターバックス、モスバーガーもよく見かけました。地下鉄は、とてもわかりやすく、東京の運賃のおよそ半額。ほとんどのタクシーでは、英語も日本語も通じないので行き先を漢字で書いて見せると、すぐにわかってくれました。話をしなければ日本人とはわからないようで、私は一度、現地の人に、地下鉄の駅を聞かれました。それとも、私がすっかり馴染んでいたのでしょうか？台湾旅行2に続く。

I went to Taiwan with a friend.My first impression was that Taiwan was very similar to Japan. But it’s not current Japan, it’s like a little older Japan. Taiwanese people, the building constructions and the freeways were also similar. There were some Japanese department stores and many convenient stores, like, 7-11 and Family-Mart. They had many Japanese sweets and goods everywhere. And I saw many Yoshinoya, McDonalds, Starbucks and Mos Burger shops. It was very easy to use the subway, and the fare is almost half that of Tokyo. Most of taxi drivers didn’t speak English or Japanese, but I was able to communicate with them by using Kanji. Most of the people didn’t realize that I was Japanese until I spoke. Once a Taiwanese asked me where the subway station was. Did I really fit in that well? Traveling to Taiwan Part 2 to be continued next time.

日本料理 Japanese cuisine

11月末に大学のスキー部の同窓会をします。先週末、その打ち合わせで何人かの懐かしい人達と会いました。卒業してかなりの年月が経ちますが、みんな、すっかり学生時代に戻ってとても楽しい時間でした。京都風の造りのレストランでのランチは、三段重ねのお弁当で、彩り美しく盛り付けられていました。日本料理は、とても繊細だと思います。ところで、今週末は、台湾です。じゃ、行ってきます！

I’ll have a reunion of my college’s skiing club the end of November. I had a meeting last weekend with some people who were former members of this club. It’s been a long time since we graduated, but we had a really nice time. It felt like we were college students again. We went to a Japanese restaurant that had a Kyoto atmosphere. We ate three-tiered lunch boxes and their dishes were colorful and beautiful. I think Japanese cuisine is very sensitive. Bye the way, I’ll be in Taiwan this weekend. See ya!

ニューヨークの子供たち Meet NY Children

私は、数日前、偶然素敵なビデオを見つけました。
その写真家は、ニューヨーク市に住んでいる１９４カ国以上の子供の写真を撮っています。 その国の数の多さに驚きました。すごい。
子供たちには、私たちに笑顔をくれる何かがあると思います。

The photographer took the pictures of children from over 194 countries that live in New York City.
I'm so surprised by the number of countries. It’s amazing!
I think children possess something in them that makes us all smile. I like this video very much. Please take a look it.

太陽の色 The color of the sun

日本で小さな子供に太陽の絵を描かせると、たいていの子供は赤で描きます。他の国の子供たちはどうなのでしょうか。アメリカ人の子供は、黄色で描くそうです。インド人もそうです。もちろん、大きくなれば橙色や朱色など色々と混ぜて、複雑な色を作り出します。 でも、基本的に日本では赤です。なぜでしょう。日本の国旗と関係があるのかもしれません。「色」の概念は国によって、かなり違うように思います。

When Japanese little children draw the sun, they usually use the color red. How about children the other countries? American kids draw it with the color yellow and Indian kids too. Of course, after they grow up, they use more realistic colors to draw the sun by mixing orange or vermilion and so on. But basically, we use red in Japan. Why? It may be in relation to Japan’s national flag. Depending on the country, I think this concept on colors is very different.

旅行計画 Travel planning

来月、友達と台湾へ行きます。今年２回目のアジア旅行です。4日間の予定なので、台北のみですが旅行の計画を立てるのはとても楽しい。ガイドブックによると、標準言語が北京語で、日本語、英語がどれくらい通じるのか少々心配ですが、旅行社のパックツアーに頼らずにすべて自分達で観光地を回ることに決めました。地下鉄を利用して市内の見たいところはだいたい行けそうです。友達は、いろいろな種類の台湾料理を食べるつもりでいます。消化薬を飲まなくちゃ！皆さん、何かアドバイスがあれば是非お知らせ下さい。

I’m going to go to Taiwan with a friend next month. This is my second Asian trip this year. It’s so much fun making plans for this trip. We’re only going to stay in Taipei because we’re going there for four days. According to some guide books, they speak Peking and we’re a little worried about whether we can communicate with them in Japanese or English. But we decided to go sightseeing by ourselves and without any package tours from the travel agency. We’ll go to some of places that we want to see by subways. My friend really wants to eat many kinds of Taiwanese food. I have to take some medicine to helping me digest! Please give me some good advice or tips for this trip if you have any.

３つのブログ Three blogs

今日は、3つの興味深いブログをご紹介したいと思います。
始めに、「アジアを食べるin Tokyo」。アジアの料理に大変興味を持っている友人は、食事に行ったレストランでいつもメモを取り、写真を撮っています。最近は北京まで出かけて行き、本場の料理やお菓子を紹介しています。
2つめは「桃とニューヨークとミュージカルと」。若い彼女は、ニューヨークでミュージカルスターを目指して猛勉強中です。女性らしい、また身近な視点から色々なニューヨーク、ブロードウェーの最新情報をつづっています。まだニューヨークへ行ったことがない私は、近い将来、ニューヨークへ観光に行き彼女のステージを見るのを楽しみにしています。
一般的に、アメリカ東海岸の、特にニューヨークの人が話す英語は早いと言われています。なので、私は向こうへ行った時に慌てないように、ニューヨーク出身の英語の先生について英会話を勉強しています。
最後にご紹介するのが、その先生のブログ「Teaching English in Japan」です。先生のコンピューター技術はとても素晴らしく、最近はビデオログとして、素敵な音楽と共にイディオムのワンポイントレッスンが聞けるようになっています。また色々な日本の風景も見ることが出来ます。そのヴィログ（ビデオログ）を見るまでは信じられないでしょう。是非、見てみて下さい。ビックリしますよ。

Today, I want to introduce three interesting blogs.
First of all, ‘Eating Asian Food in Tokyo’. My friend who is very interested in Asian food made this blog. When she goes to Asian restaurants, she always makes some notes and takes some pictures. Recently, she went to Beijing and introduced some of their food and sweets.
Second, ‘Peach (momo) & NY & Musical’. This young girl wants to become a musical star and she’s striving hard to achieve her goal in NY. She always writes various things on the latest information in NY and on or off Broadway from two viewpoints, her feminine side and one close to her heart. I haven’t been to NY yet, but I’m planning to go there for sightseeing in the near future and I’m looking forward to seeing her perform on stage.
Generally speaking, people who are on the upper east coast of America speak English very fast, especially people from NY. That’s why I’m studying English with a teacher from NY. This way I won’t panic or have any problems when I go there.
The last blog I want to introduce is ‘Teaching English in Japan’. This is my English teacher’s blog. His computer skills and techniques are incredible. Recently, he began attaching one-point lesson videos for learning idioms with beautiful background music to his blogs (vlogs). And you can also see many different Japanese landscapes in these vlogs. You won’t believe this until you see them or him in action. You should try his vlogs. They’re amazing!

「と」「ば」「たら」「なら」 Particles

日本人が無意識に使い分けている「助詞」は、外国人にとってとても厄介なもののようです。「と」「ば」「たら」「なら」の使い分けについて質問をされました。これらの助詞には「もし」だけでなく、「～たとき」、「いつも」、「アドバイス」 など他にも意味があり、また重なっている意味もあります。色々な意見があるでしょうが、日本語教師暦の長い叔母の助言を受けて、私なりの簡単な使い分けを説明したいと思います。

「と」真実や絶対に決まっていることを表す
・ 夏は朝4時になると、明るくなる。

「ば」ことわざや慣用句などによく使われ、普段の会話ではあまり使わない
・ ちりも積もれば山となる。

「たら」一般的に、よく使われる
・ もし宝くじに当たったら、ベンツを買おう。

「なら」会話で、相手の言ったことに応える時に使う
・A：郵便局へ行きます。・
・B：郵便局へ行くなら、切手を買ってきて下さい。

Japanese people unconsciously use ‘particles’ in their sentences, but it's very difficult for foreigners to use them. I was asked how to use ‘to’, ‘ba’, ‘tara’ and ‘nara’. These particles have many different meanings, not only ‘if’ but also ‘when’, ‘always’, ‘advice’ and some other usages. And they also have the same meanings. My aunt who has taught Japanese for a long time helps me, so I’ll give you some easy explanations about these particles. I know there are a lot of opinions about this, but this is just my personal opinion.

‘to’ express the truth and when something is absolutely sure.
・In summer it becomes light at 4:00a.m.

‘ba’ used for proverbs and idioms. Rarely used for everyday conversation.
・A penny saved is a penny earned.

‘tara’ generally used for everyday conversation
・If I win the lottery, I’ll buy a Mercedes.

‘nara’ used in conversations when you are responding to someone.
・A : I’ll go to the post office.
・B : If you go to the post office, please buy some stamps for me.

鮪のぼり Tuna fish flags

日本では、5月5日の子供の日に子供の幸福を願い、家庭で武者人形や鎧兜を飾り、外に鯉のぼりを立てます。でも、葛西臨海公園の中にある葛西臨海水族園には、鮪のぼりが立っています。友達がこの写真を送ってくれました。始め、なぜそこでは、鮪の旗を立てているのかわかりませんでした。その水族園では、マグロが回遊している巨大な水槽があり、たくさんのマグロが群泳しているのをすぐそばで見ることが出来ます。だから、鯉ではなく、鮪のぼりが、空を泳いでいるんだと気づきました。おもしろいでしょう。

In Japan, the 5th of May is Children’s Day. On this day, we decorate our homes with samurai dolls or the armor, and also set up carp flags outside. We do this to pray for our children’s happiness. Kasai Seaside Aquarium which is in the Kasai Seaside Park has some tuna fish flags like the carp flags. My friend gave me this picture. At first, I didn't understand why they’d sat up tuna fish flags. The aquarium has many water tanks and a huge one filled with tunas. They swim around it and you can see them up close. Now I understand why they have the tuna flags waving in the sky. It’s interesting, isn’t it?

ネイルサロン Nail salon

東京では、とてもネイルサロンが増えています。私は、手のマニュキアはしないのですが、夏、サンダルを履く季節だけぺディキュアを楽しみます。今年の夏は、娘の勧めで初めてネイルサロンへ行きました。フットマーサージ、足のジェットバス、甘皮の処理を済ませてから、ネイル･エナメルを塗ります。さすがプロ、とてもきれいにしてくれました。その後ネイルアートとしてハイビスカスのような形の花を描いてもらいました。全部で約２時間。とてもリラックスして、満足しました。

The number of nail salons has increased in the past few years in Tokyo. I don’t usually get manicures, but I always get pedicures during the summer, I enjoy pedicures because I like wearing sandals. I went to a nail salon this summer for the first time. My daughter recommended it. I had a foot-bath, foot massage, treatment for my cuticles and I had my nail polished. The nail artist made my toenails look very beautiful.She was really professional! After that, she drew some hibiscus flowers on them. It took about two hours. I was very relaxed and pleased.

おはようございます Good morning

私にはわからない。なぜ「おはようございます」を言わないのか。
私が仕事をしている国立の研究所の敷地はとても広く、色々な研究室の入っている建物、実験棟、そして病院もあります。外国人も含めてかなりの数の人間が働いていて、私が顔と名前を知っている人はごく僅かです。でも、私は、朝、その敷地内で会った人みんなに「おはようございます」を言います。日本人らしく軽く会釈を返す人はいいのですが、まったく知らん顔をする人にはあきれてしまいます。それは、職種、性別や年齢の問題ではありません。一日の始まりの朝、お互いに気持ちよく挨拶が出来ればと思います。

I don’t get it. Why people don’t say ‘Good morning’ ?
I’m working for a national research institute which is a huge place. There are many buildings there for doing research, experimenting and it also has a hospital. So a large number of the people who work there including some foreigners, and I only know a few people there. But when I meet people there in the mornings, I always say ‘Good morning’ to everyone. It’s not bad to respond with a light bow like we Japanese do. But I’m surprised at some people who completely ignore me. It’s not a matter of what type of job, gender or age the person is. I’d like everyone to able to greet one another because every morning should be started off with a pleasant feeling

北インド料理 North Indian food

「東京でアジアを食べる会」の友人と北インド料理のレストランでランチを食べました。
インド料理店で主なカレーのメニューは、チキン、マトン、卵、野菜、豆のカレーです。でも、そこにはポークカレーがあるの？珍しいと思いました。そのポークカレーと、とても大きなナン、小さなサラダ、タンドリーチキンのセットを食べました。私達の好みに合わせているのでしょう、カレーの辛さは好みに合わせて調節してくれます。やはり辛いカレーの後には、甘い飲み物がいいです。甘いマサラティー（チャイ）を飲みました。もう南インドへ帰ってしまった私の生徒のハリーさんの奥さんが作ってくれたお料理を思い出しました。とても美味しかった。次は、南インド料理のレストランを探そう。

I ate lunch at a north Indian restaurant with a member of ‘Eating Asian food in Tokyo’. Indian restaurants usually have chicken, mutton, egg, vegetables and beans curry as their main dishes. But do they have pork curry? I think this is rare. The pork curry, huge naan, small salad with tandoori chicken was a set menu. Each curry was catered to our liking, so we can ask to have the flavor milder or hotter. After eating spicy curry, it’s good to drink something sweet. I had a cup of chai. This tea reminded me of the dishes that Hari-san’s wife made for me. Hari-san was one of my students and is from southern India. His wife’s cooking was very delicious. He and his family returned to southern India a few months ago. I miss them. Next time I’ll look for a south Indian restaurant.

「むだ」と「もったいない」 "Muda" & "Mottainai"

あなたは、「むだ」と「もったいない」の違いがわかりますか。
私は、何人かの友人に聞いてみました。そして皆、いろいろと答えてくれました。
結論として、「むだ」というのは、役に立たない、やっただけの効果が得られないことを表し、「もったいない」というのは、価値のある人や物がそれを認められず惜しいことを表すと思います。「もったいない」は、日本人独特の考え方だと思うので、なかなか外国人に理解してもらうのは難しいです。

例：腐った食べ物を冷蔵庫にとっておくのはむだ。
　　まだ食べられるものを捨てるのはもったいない。

アフリカ、ケニヤの元環境相のワンガリ・マータイさんはこの「もったいない」に賛同しています。私は、彼女を大変尊敬しています。

Do you know the differences between ‘Muda’ and ‘Mottainai’ in Japanese.
I asked some friends about it and they gave me several interpretations.
As a result, ‘Muda’ means something has no value or can not be used. It is uselessness and meaningless.　‘Mottainai’ means to waste something that can still be used or has value. ‘Mottainai’ is a peculiar Japanese way of thinking. So sometimes it’s very difficult for foreigners to understand ‘Mottainai’.

Ex: It's pointless to keep rotten food in a refrigerator. ‘Muda’
　　 It’s a waste to throw food away that is still edible. ‘Mottainai’

Wangari Maathai who was an ex-assistant minister for Environment and Natural Resources in Kenya, Africa agrees with this way of thinking ‘Mottainai’. I have a lot of respect for her.

ビッグイシュー The Big Issue

皆さんは、「ビッグイシュー」という雑誌をご存知でしょうか。先日、私は、生徒の1人から教えてもらいました。売っているのは、ホームレスの人達です。彼らが自立した生活が出来るように、収入を得る機会としてこの雑誌を売っています。彼らは8つのルールを守っています。例えば、ビッグイシューのIDカードを提示して、決められた場所で売るなどです。現在、28カ国でこの活動は行われています。日本では、現在10都市で売られているので、私も次回、新宿へ行った時に買うつもりです。

Do you know the magazine entitled ‘The Big Issue”? The other day, one of my students talked to me about it. Only homeless people can sell it. They are selling it as a way to earn enough money to become independent. They have 8 rules for selling it. For example, they have to show their ID cards for “The Big Issue” and they have to sell it in designated places. The same activity is being carried out in 28 countries. There are 10 cities that sell it in Japan. Next time, I go to Shinjuku I’m going to buy it.

基本的な日本語を話せるようになると、時々、生徒達は、日本とその生徒の国の一般的な考え方やマナーの違いなどについて、私に聞きます。その事を、私は、お互いの文化を知るとてもいい機会だと思っています。でも、私が意見を言う時は、いつも「人によって色々な意見があるけれど、私は・・・と思う。」と言います。少し大げさですが、そうでないと生徒は、私の意見を日本人の代表のように聞いてしまうからです。同じ日本人でもいろいろな価値観を持っています、だからその点をわかってもらいたいのです。また、いい加減な情報を伝えたくはないので、それらの事もよく調べるようにしています。私は、人とつながりのあるこの仕事を大事にしたいと思っています。

Recently, I feel a lot of responsibility when teaching Japanese.After students learn to speak basic Japanese, they sometimes ask me about the differences in general ideas, manners, etc between Japan and their countries. I think it's a great opportunity for us to learn about each other’s culture. But when I share my opinions with them, I usually say, “There are many opinions about Japan, but I think ….” This is a little exaggerated, but sometimes my students listen to me as if they were talking with a representative of Japan. I want them to understand that everyone has a different sense of value. And I don’t want to give them incorrect information, so I try to study about these things as well. I really value the connection I have between people and my job.

チキンライス Chicken Rice

シンガポールのチキンライスは、日本のとは全然違います。その事を初めて知ったのは、昨年シンガポールへ行った時でした。一般的な日本のチキンライスは、鶏肉、たまねぎ、グリンピースなどをご飯と一緒に炒めたトマトケチャップ味です。シンガポールのチキンライスは海南風で写真のようなものです。私は他にヨーグルトドリンクのラッシー、デザートにバナナのロティを食べました。私が行った西荻窪にある「夢飯」は、とても美味しいので機会があったら是非行ってみて下さい。「夢飯」のオーナーはルイさんです。彼の友人である私の英語の先生がブログでビデオ紹介しています。スミス先生のブログを見て来たと言うと、きっと話が弾むでしょう。

Singaporean Chicken rice is totally different from Japanese rice. When I went to Singapore last year, I found this out. Normally, when Japanese people make chicken rice, we fry the chicken, onions, green peas and rice with ketchup. This is a photo of Singaporean Hainanese chicken rice. I drank a yogurt drink called lassi and had banana roti for dessert at the same time. I ate this meal at ‘Mu-Hung’ in Nishi-Ogikubo and the dishes were very delicious. I recommend this restaurant to you. Rui-san is the owner of Mu-Hung. His friend is my English teacher who introduced Rui-san in a video on his blog. I’m sure you will enjoy talking with Rui-san and the staffs.

東京でアジアを食べる会Eating Asian food in Tokyo

最近、友人が「東京でアジアを食べる会」という会を作りました。私はその会員No.1です。
吉祥寺にあるベトナム料理店「ベトナムハウス」では、ランチに鶏肉のフォーと揚げ春巻き、冷たいチェーを食べました。フォーは米麺を使った料理です。冷たいチェーとは、デザートで緑豆のお汁粉です。氷と一緒に、細かく刻んだピーナッツがのっていてとても美味しかった。
湯島の近くでは、韓国家庭料理を「チョン　ハク　トン」で食べました。
まっこりという白酒のような味のする韓国のどぶろく、チヂミ、キムチ餃子などを頼みました。始めに出る突き出しの種類が多いので、4～5人のグループで行った方がもっといろいろな料理を楽しめると思いました。野菜をたくさん使いとてもヘルシーでした。
私は、食べる専門なのですが、その友人は、自分でも作る為に、エスニック料理教室へ通い始めました。さて、次はインドへ行きましょうか。

Recently, one of my friends started a club called “Eating Asian food in Tokyo” and I was the first person to join her club.
We went to a Vietnamese restaurant called ‘Vietname House’ for lunch in Kichijoji. I ate chicken pho, fried spring rolls and cold sweet green-bean soup. The pho is made from white rice noodles. The green-bean soup was a dessert with minced peanuts and some ice cubes. All the dishes were delicious.
The other day, we had a home cooked Korean dinner at ‘Chon Haku Ton’ near Yushima.We ordered Makkori, a Korean pancake, Kimchi Jiaozi and so on. Makkori is a Korean alcohol that tastes a little sweet like Shirozake which is a Japanese rice wine. I thought we should have gone there with a few more people because at first, they served many small appetizers before we ordered. That way we could have enjoyed more dishes. The dishes were very healthy because they used a lot of vegetables. I only enjoy eating, but my friend started learning how to make ethnic dishes because she wants to be able to make them on her own. Well, we’ll go to an Indian restaurant next time.

サムライブルー Samurai Blue

私は、サッカーファンではないのだけれど、さすがにワールドカップの結果は気になります。サムライブルー、日本チームは、第一試合のオーストラリアには、３：１で負けてしまい、第二試合のクロアチア戦では引き分け。次のステージへ残る為には、第三試合のブラジルに勝たなければなりません。ご存知のように、ブラジルは最強です。う～ん、これはかなり厳しい。奇跡は起きるでしょうか。次の試合は、22日です。頑張れニッポン！

I’m not a big Soccer fan, but I really care about the results of the World Cup. Samurai Blue, the Japanese team lost its first game against Australia. The result was 3:1. The second game ended in a draw against Croatia. The result was 0:0. It has to win the third game against Brazil in order advance the next stage. As you know, Brazil is the strongest team. Umm, this is will be very hard for them. I’m hoping for a miracle. They’re going to have the next game on the 22nd. Go in and win, Nippon!

友達の本 A book of my friend

出版社で仕事をしていた時の友人が本を出しました。
題名は「悦楽バイリンガル子育て　オットは外国人　コドモは未来人」
彼女の初めてのイラストエッセイ本です。6月23日から書店に出ますが、その前に彼女の新しいHPから少し中を見ることが出来ます。彼女らしい、ほんわかとした心温まるイラストと文です。是非、見てみて下さい。

One of my friends who I used to work together with at a publishing company wrote her first book.
The title is “Etsuraku bilingual kosodate otto wa gaikokujin kodomo wa miraijin.”
This is her first time to write an essay with illustrations. This book will be published and sold from June 23rd at various book stores in Japan. 引き出し Drawers

台所の引き出しには、スプーン、フォークなどが入っています。クローゼットの引き出しには、靴下や下着などを入れています。
では、人の内面の引き出しはどうでしょうか。
私は、色々な人から話を聞くのがとても好きです。年齢も性別も国籍も関係なく、また私の生活には何の関係もない話でも聞きたいと思います。
私には、職場の皆が研究している専門的な知識は何もありません。でも、何か質問をすると、先生達、研究員の人たちは解りやすく説明をしてくれます。一つの話から、疑問が生まれます。それを教えてもらい、また次の疑問へ。そうして少しずつ知識が増えていくのは楽しいことです。
人の内面の引き出しには、学習した知識だけではなく、自分が経験した嬉しかった事、悲しかった事、困った事などのほかに、人から聞いたその人の考え方や気持ちなども入っていると思います。
私は、その引き出しの数の多い人の話に魅力を感じます。

There are some spoons, forks etc. in the drawers of my kitchen. And there are some socks, underwear etc. in the drawers of my closet.
How about the internal drawers of people’s mind?
I really like listening to the stories and talking to people of different ages, genders and nationalities, even if my life has no relationship with their stories.
I don’t have any technical knowledge of the things they study in my working place. But when I ask questions about something, the doctors and researchers give me the explanations in ways that are easy for me to understand. Usually after have the explanation to one story or point, this makes me think of another question. After I learn the answer to something, I always have another question. Improving my knowledge little by little is a lot of fun for me.
I think the internal drawers of a person’s mind don’t only contain knowledge, but their experiences, such feelings as happiness, sadness, embarrassment and so on. And also there are many opinions, way of thinking and the feelings of other people in it as well.
I'm fascinated when I listen to the stories of people who have a lot of drawers.

イスラエル料理 Israel food

初めてイスラエル料理のレストランへ行きました。
50人位でいっぱいなるこじんまりとした雰囲気のいいところでした。タイ料理やインド料理のレストランへ行くと、独特の香辛料の匂いがしますがそれは感じませんでした。そのお店の主な料理が食べられるコースを選びました。魚貝類はなく、肉はラムとチキンのみ、野菜が中心のとてもヘルシーな食べ物です。ひよこ豆がよく使われていて、私は、トマト味のスープ、スパイシーサラダ、ファラフェルがとても美味しかったです。ラッキーなことに、月に1回のベリーダンスのショーがあって、観客も一緒になって楽しみました。また是非行きたいところです。

I went to an Israeli restaurant for the first time. It was cozy and had a nice ambience. If 50 people come, the restaurant will be crowded. When I go to Thai or Indian restaurants, I usually smell particular spices there, but there was no special smells at this place. I chose the all-you-can-eat-special. They don’t have seafood and serve only lamb and chicken for the meat dishes. Most of their dishes only had vegetables so it’s very healthy. There were many kinds of dishes including Chickpeas. I liked the tomato flavored soup, the spicy salad, the Falafel and so on. I was really lucky because there was a belly dance show that night. They do this show once a month. The audience enjoyed dancing with the dancer. I want to go there again.

忙しい週末 Busy weekend

先週末、東京はいきなり夏でした。
通常、5月はさわやかなお天気が多いのに今年は少し変です。先週は梅雨かと思うような日が続き、肌寒い日もありました。
さぁ、衣替え！ということで、夏物の洋服を出し、居間のラグをウール製から籐製のものに替え、布団は薄手のものを出しました。暑くても天気の良い方が、元気が出ます。太陽の恩恵でしょうね。
来月1日から、日本の学校では一斉に、制服が夏服に替わります。私の母校のセーラー服も紺色から白に替わります。
さて、今週のお天気はどうなるでしょう？

The last weekend, it was suddenly summer here in Tokyo.　
We usually have nice weather in May, but this year is a little strange. There were a few rainy days last week that were like the rainy season and also we had a few cold days.
Let’s all do some seasonal clothes changing! I decided to do this and took out my summer clothes, changed the rug from wool to a rattan. And I also took out some thinner quilts. The good weather gives me much vitality even if it's hot. It’s the benefit of having the sun, isn’t it?
From June 1st, all of the school uniforms will change to the summer version in Japan. When I was a school girl, I wore a middy blouse. It was navy blue, but we changed to a white one during summer.
Anyway, I’m just wondering what kind of weather we’ll have this week.

マウンテンバイク Mountain Bike

ひどい風邪をひいて自分の体力のなさをつくづく感じた私は、身体を鍛える事にしました。長く続けられる事は何かなと考えて、「自転車」を思いつきました。
私はもう一つの仕事として、ある国立の研究所で働いています。週に3日、自宅から約30分の距離をマウンテンバイクで通勤する事にしました。先ず、私が3代目となるマウンテンバイクを家族から譲り受けました。次に、自転車屋さんに点検をしてもらいサドルを新しくしたり、小さなカゴをつけたり、1時間ほどかけて調整してくれました。それから何を着て乗ろうかと考えて、仕事に行くのにさすがにサイクリングウェアーという訳にはいかず、少しカジュアルでということで妥協しました。
電車から見る景色とは違う発見があったり、帰り道に歩いては無理だった所にも少し遠回りが出来たり、少しずつ知らない道を探検してみようとワクワクしています。体力がついたら、いつかハワイで毎年9月に行われるホノルル･センチュリーライドに挑戦してみようかしら・・・。夢はふくらむばかりです。梅雨前のこの時期はサイクリングに最適です。

I decided to start exercising because I felt that I didn’t have much energy when I had a bad cold. I thought about what I could do continually for a long time. Then I came up with the idea of riding a bicycle. I have another job at a national institute. I’m starting to go there by mountain bike three times a week. It takes about 30 minutes from my home. First of all, I received the bike from my family as a third user. Next I took it to a bicycle shop for a tune-up. I got a new saddle, a small basket and so on. The staff of the shop checked my bike for about an hour. After that I thought what I should wear. Of course, I can’t wear cycling wear because I have to work at the office. OK, I’ll wear casual clothes. I found some different scenes that I didn’t notice when I used the train. I always try to go somewhere that I couldn’t go on foot on the way home. I’m a little excited about exploring new streets. After I get stronger, I wonder if I could sign up for the Honolulu Century Ride in September in Hawaii someday. My dreams are getting bigger and bigger. It’s a really nice time to go bicycling before the rainy season.

悪い風邪 Bad cold

ベトナムから帰って来て少し忙しかったのと、猫の目のように変わる東京のお天気のせいで、すっかり風邪をこじらせてしまいました。このゴールデンウィークは体調回復で終わってしまい残念でした。皆さんもお身体に気を付けてお過ごし下さい。

I’ve had a really bad cold. After I came back to Japan from Vietnam, I was a little busy and the weather in Tokyo was very strange. I spent this Golden Week only recovering from my condition. I’m a little disappointed. Everyone, please take care of yourself.

ベトナム Vietnam

ベトナムのホーチミンへ行きました。初めての社会主義国への旅行で、ガイドブックを読んだり、インターネットで色々と調べて行きましたが、「百聞は一見にしかず」、いい経験になりました。
ホーチミンは、すごい勢いで発展している都市で、郊外にどんどん高いビルが建ち始めていました。主な交通手段はオートバイで、一台のオートバイに家族全員（父･母･小さな子供二人）が乗っている姿も珍しくありません。その姿には、たくましささえ感じました。現地の通貨10,000ドンは日本の約70円に相当し、買い物をする時の計算は大変でしたが日本と比べて物価はかなり安かったです。ベトナム料理は何でも美味しく、私は揚げ春巻きやベトナムコーヒーなどが好きでした。日本なら何処にでもあるスターバックス、マクドナルド、コンビニ等はなく、ホテルの近くでケンタッキーフライドチキンのお店を一店だけ見つけました。オプショナルツアーで行ったメコン川クルーズの水上マーケットも興味深かったです。やはり人の生活と水は切り離せないものだと思いました。

I went to Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam. It’s my first trip to this socialist country. Before I went there, I read some guide books and I checked out the city by the Internet. ‘Seeing is believing’, but it was a good experience for me. Ho Chi Min City is really developing and they’ve started to build many high buildings. Most of the people use motorbikes for transportation. It’s not rare for an entire family (father, mother and two little kids) ride on one motorbike. I felt that they were very tough. Their currency is Dong. 10,000 Dong is about the equivalent of 70 yen. It was difficult to calculate when I bought something, but their prices a lot cheaper than ours. Vietnamese food is very delicious and I liked the fried spring rolls, Vietnamese coffee, and so on. There are many Starbucks, McDonalds and convenient stores everywhere in Japan. I couldn’t find shops like those there. I only found a Kentucky Fried Chicken near my hotel. I enjoyed the Mekong River cruise and I was also very interested in the markets on the river. I realized that water is a very important part of our life.

一字違い The difference of a character

日本語では、たった一字の違いで意味が全く変わってきます。例えば、「使わない」と「使えない」。「使わない」は自分の意思が働くのに対して、「使えない」は自分ではどうしようもありません。つまりその物が壊れていたり、何か問題があるときです。その点、英語では、使う動詞が’do not’ や’can not’のように変わるので、間違うことはないでしょう。買ったものを返品する時に、この一字違いに気をつけないとお店の人の誤解を招く事になります。

In Japanese, the difference of a character makes a totally different meaning. For example: ‘tsukawanai’ and ‘tsukaenai’. When I use ‘tsukawanai’ that means I don’t use something. This is based on a personal opinion. But when I use ‘tsukaenai’ that means I can’t use something because I have no choice. This means the thing is broken or there are some problems with it. There is no mistake about this point in English because you use a different verb for ‘tsukawanai’ and ‘tsukaenai’ like ‘do not’ and ‘can not’. When you want to return something at shops, please be careful of these two subtle differences in the meaning of these two verb forms. Good luck!

アメリカのワシントンDCからこの写真を受け取りました。そこの桜もとても有名です。グレースはきれいな赤い着物を着ています。彼女はとても可愛い！

I received this photo from Washington D.C. in the U.S.A. The cherry blossom there is also very famous. Grace is wearing beautiful red kimono. She is really cute!

４月１日 April 1st.

あなたはエイプリールフールを楽しみましたか？私は楽しみました。
忙しい毎日を送っていると忘れてしまいそうですが、一年に一度、ウイットのわかる人にいたずらをしてその後、お互いに笑い合いたいと思っています。今年も3月に入ってから、どのようにしようかと頭を悩ませていました。私がひまですかって。いいえ、とんでもない。笑いは、人の気持ちを幸せに、そして健康にしてくれます。私は幾つになってもこの日を忘れずに楽しみたいと思っています。来年は何をしようかしら。

Did you enjoy this April Fool’s Day? I did.
When people are busy, they forget this day. But I want everyone to understand the wit behind playing tricks once a year so we can laugh at each other later. Since this March, I was struggling to think about how to do this. Did I have much free time? No! Laughing makes us happy and gives us good health. So I don’t want to forget this day and want to always enjoy this day no matter how old I am. I wonder what I’ll do this next year.

桜の咲く季節 Cherry Blossom Season

桜が咲き始める3月の後半は卒業式のシーズンです。学校生活を共に過ごした友達や先生との別れの時期です。そして桜が満開に咲く4月には入学式や入社式があり、新しい生活が始まり新しい人との出会いがあります。日本では、春はスタートの季節です。日本人が桜の花を好きなのは、桜の綺麗さはもちろんですが、新しい事を始める喜びの時に咲くからかもしれません。色々な種類の桜がある中で、私は「ソメイヨシノ」が一番好きです。 皆さん、卒業そして入学おめでとう！

追伸 : 欧米の新学期は9月からなので秋の行事ですね。

The end of March the cherry trees start to bloom. This is the graduation season. We part from friends and teachers who spent a lot of time with at the school. And when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, we have the entrance ceremonies at schools and companies. We start our new lives and meet new people. Spring is the starting season in Japan. Japanese people like cherry blossoms very much because of their beauty. And another reason I think is because the cherry flowers are in full bloom at this starting period. There are many kinds of cherry trees and my favorite is ‘Someiyoshino’.
Congratulations to all the graduates and new school admissions.

P.S. The new term in Western countries start in September and it’s an autumn event.

インドから From India

西インドのプネ出身の友達から面白いファイルを送ってもらいました。「日本におけるヒンドゥー教の影響」というファイルでヒンドゥー教が起源である神様を紹介しています。たくさんなので、すべてをブログに載せるのは無理ですが、その中で日本でも馴染みの深い七福神の神様から、大黒天、弁財天そして毘沙門天を紹介したいと思います。

I received an interesting file from my friend from Pune, in west India. The file is entitled ‘Hindu influence on Japan’. It introduces some Gods that came from the Hindu religion. There is much information in this file so I can’t put it all in my blog. I decided to introduce Daikokuten, Benzaiten and Bishamonten because they’re very common gods of Shichifukujin in Japan.

リカちゃんとバービー Rika-chan & Barbie

着せ替え人形の名前です。日本の代表的な人形はリカちゃん、アメリカはバービー人形。それを見比べた時に、ある生徒と話した事を思い出しました。日本では、女の子は人から可愛いと見られたいけれど、アメリカの女の子はセクシーに見られたいそうです。その違いがこの２つの人形の容姿によく表現されていると思います。また別の生徒は、日本の女性は大人になっても考え方が幼くて、男性に依存していると思うと言っていました。確かに以前はそうだったと思いますが、最近少しずつ変わってきて強く、独立している女性が増えていると思います。

These are dress-up dolls. Rika-chan is the representative doll of Japan and Barbie is same for the U.S.A. When I compared these dolls, I recollected on a story I had with an American student. In Japan, the girls want people to think they look cute when they look at them, but in America, the girls want people to think they look sexy when they look at them. I think these dolls representations are very different. The other student said that many Japanese young women are immature and don’t have their own opinion. And they rely on men too much. I understood his feelings because they used to be like that, but recently, they are gradually becoming stronger and independent. At least, I hope so.

クラッシュ Crash

アメリカ映画「クラッシュ」を見ました。関連のある７つのエピソードが集まって一つの作品になっている素晴らしい作品だと思います。多文化社会のアメリカにおける人種差別の問題は、単一文化の日本にいると、頭ではわかっても、心からは理解の出来ないことのように思います。７つのエピソードには、心温まるものや、やるせなくなるものがありました。違う文化を持っていても同じ人間です。もっと相手の立場を思いやる気持ちを皆が持てたらと感じました。

I saw an American movie entitled ‘Crash’. I thought it was a great movie because of its seven related episodes. There is a lot of racial discrimination in America because it’s a multicultural country. I understand the problem mentally, but in my heart, I don’t because I live in Japan. Japan has a monoculture. There are some heart warming and some disconsolate episodes in this movie. We are all the same even though we have different cultures. I wish everyone would think about the feelings of the people around them.

私がブログを立ち上げてから、何人かの友人がメールで感想を送ってくれました。とても嬉しかった。少なくても１週間に１度は書き込みをしたいと思っているのですが、仕事などが忙しい時には大変だと感じる事もあります。そういう時、皆さんから頂いたコメントを読むと元気が出てまた頑張ろうという気になります。どうもありがとう。

After I made my blog, some friends sent me their remarks about it. I was very glad to read them. I want to write something at least once a week but sometimes it’s difficult for me to do it because of my job. When I read their comments, they give me energy and make motivate me to do my best. Thank you all so much.

義理チョコ Obligatory Chocolate

2月１４日はバレンタインデーでした。
皆さんはどんな日を過ごしましたか。日本には義理チョコというものがあります。
職場でバレンタインデーに、女性が好き、嫌いに関係なく男性の上司や同僚にあげるチョコレートのことです。このことは、日本語のテキストブックの’Japanese for busy people’ のトピックにもなっています。これに関しては、さまざまな意見があります。だた習慣として義務的にチョコレートをあげるのはとても失礼だという考え、もう一方では、オフィスで和やかな雰囲気を作るためのコミュニケーション手段という考え方です。最近のあるアンケートによると70％のOLと50％のサラリーマンがこの習慣がなくなって欲しいと思っているそうです。皆さんはどう思われますか。日本には、またバレンタインデーのお返しの日として3月14日のホワイトデーがあります。その時は、男性が女性にキャンディーやクッキーなどをあげます。どちらにしても、お菓子メーカーの戦略勝ちの気がしますが・・・。韓国では、4月14日にブラックデーと言うのもあるそうです。面白いですね。

February 14th was Valentine’s Day.
How did you spend this date? On this day we sometimes give obligatory chocolate. It’s called “giri-choco” in Japanese. Female office workers customarily give chocolate to male superiors and co-workers at their office on Valentine’s Day. It's does not matter if the women like or dislike the men. This is also one of the topics in the Japanese textbook entitled ‘Japanese for busy people’. There are various opinions about this. Some people think that it is very rude because it’s not from the heart. Meanwhile, some people think that it is a communicative tool for making a friendlier atmosphere in the office. According to a recent questionnaire, 70% of female office workers and 50% of the businessmen want to quit this custom.　What do you think about this? And also, we have a White Day on March 14th in Japan. The men give the women candy or cookies in exchange for the gifts they received on Valentine’s Day. In both cases, I think confectionery companies win. There is a Black Day on April 14th in Korea. I think it’s very interesting too!

名古屋 Nagoya

先週、友達と名古屋へ行きました。今年の日本は寒く、名古屋でも少し雪が降りました。昨年の3月から9月まで行われた愛知万博はとても混んで、賑やかだったそうです。
名古屋市はこじんまりとした都市で地下鉄がとても便利でした。
名古屋城、熱田神宮、そして徳川美術館を見に行きました。熱田神宮では、着物姿の花婿、花嫁を見ました。名古屋の有名な食べ物として、味噌カツ、名古屋コーチン、ひつまぶし等ありますが、その中でも、ひつまぶしは一度食べてみる価値はあると思いました。食べ方がおもしろい！
地下鉄の駅でワシントンから仕事で来ていたアメリカ人に熱田神宮までの行き方を聞かれました。説明し、出口を教えたら、最後に日本語で「ありがとう」と言われて、私も外国へ出かける時は、その国の言葉で挨拶くらいはできるようにしたいと思いました。

I went to Nagoya with my friend last week. This winter is really cold in Japan and we had a little snow there. Expo 2005 Aichi was held from March to September and I heard it was very crowded and lively. Nagoya city is very small and the subway is very convenient. We went to see Nagoya castle, Atsuta-jingu shrine and the Tokugawa art museum for sightseeing. We could see a groom and bride at Atsuta shrine. There are some famous foods in Nagoya, for example, Miso-katsu, Nagoya–cochin and Hitsumabushi and so on. I think everyone should try ‘Hitsumabushi’ at least once. The way of eating it is very interesting!
I met some American business people from Washington at the subway station and they asked me how to get to Atsuta shrine. I explained how and told them the right exit, after that, they said “Arigato”. I think that when I visit a foreign country, I want to be able to at least say greetings in that country’s mother tongue.

女ことば Female words

日本語には、女ことばと男ことばがあります。 以前、この事を１人のアメリカ人に話したら「差別じゃないの？」と聞かれたことがあり驚きました。英語には男性と女性が使うことばに違いはなく、理解できなかったようです。でも、その違いのない英語にも’fabulous’という単語は女性が使い、もし男性が使ったらゲイと思われるということを、最近教えてもらいました。私は、女ことばを使った会話には柔らかなやさしさがあって良いと思うのですが、この頃ずいぶん変わってきて、特に女子学生の会話はまるで男の子のようです。とても残念なことです。これは私の意見ですが、女性には食事の時に「これは、うまい」ではなくて、「これは、おいしい」と言って欲しいと思います。他の国ではことばの違いはどうなのでしょうか。ご存知の方がいらしたら是非コメントして下さい。

There are some female and male words in Japanese language.
Once when I talked about this with an American, he asked me, ‘Isn’t this discrimination?’ The English language doesn’t have these word differences so that he couldn’t understand. Recently I heard ‘fabulous’ is only used by women and if men use it people think they are gay. I like the fact that Japanese women can use feminine words in their conversations because this creates a soft and gentle atmosphere. There are many changes among young female students these days. They sound like boys. It’s very disappointing. This is only my opinion, but I would like all women to say ‘kore wa oishii’ instead of ‘kore wa umai’. I'm wondering how other countries feel about this. If you have the answer to this problem, please send your comments to my blog.

春節 Happy Chinese New Year！

中国で、旧暦のお正月を祝う春節、今年は１月２９日（日）です。
この春節を祝い、日本でも横浜中華街などでは数多くのイベントを行います。中国獅子舞や龍が舞い、爆竹が鳴り響き、イルミネーションやキャンドルがともる華やかなものだそうです。国によって新年の祝い方はかなり違いますね。 今、日本と中国は政治的に微妙な関係にありますが、すべての人にとって良い年であればと思います。

January 29th, 2006 is “Shunsetsu” this is the date that Chinese people celebrate the lunar New Year. There are many events in Yokohama’s China town and other places in Japan. I’ve heard that people perform the Chinese lion dance, the dragon dance and they explode firecrackers for the festivities. The illuminations and the candle lights are very beautiful there. Every country has different celebrations for the New Year. Now Japan and China have some political problems, but I would still like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.

I'm teaching Japanese to foreigners and also learning English. Recently, I think that studying a language doesn't mean just memorizing grammar and vocabulary.
